Introduction

Sau Crore (1991), a film produced, directed, and starring Dev Anand, featured debut performances from Fatima Sheikh and Raman Kapoor in the romantic lead. The movie was inspired by the life of Indian badminton player Syed Modi, who was tragically murdered, a case that captured national attention. While the premise—blending biographical elements with a mystery narrative—was intriguing to many critics, the film received heavy criticism for its performances, which were deemed subpar. Despite Dev Anand's legendary status, it was noted that his indomitable spirit was the driving force behind the film's creation, yet the execution left much to be desired.
In the film, CBI Inspector Kumar (Dev Anand) investigates the mysterious murder of Raj (Raman Kapoor) in Lucknow, leaving his fiancée, Kamlesh (Fatima Sheikh), devastated. The story closely mirrors the real-life murder of Syed Modi, who was killed after a training session at the K.D. Singh Babu Stadium. The investigation takes a surprising turn when the police implicate Syed Modi's wife, Ameeta Modi, and her lover—politician Raja Sanjay Singh (played by Naseeruddin Shah), a prominent figure in the Congress Party. This political angle adds layers of intrigue and suspicion to the case, making it a complex and controversial plot.
Despite the involvement of music composer Bappi Lahiri, who was at the peak of his career, and an impressive list of singers including Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, and Anuradha Paudwal, the film's music failed to make an impact, which was seen as a missed opportunity. The film's songs were unable to elevate the narrative, contributing to its poor reception.
At the box office, Sau Crore was a major commercial failure. Despite its high production value and star power, it failed to even reach a single crore in earnings, marking it as a flop at the time of its release. The film's inability to connect with the audience, combined with lacklustre performances and disappointing music, resulted in its status as a forgotten venture in Dev Anand's illustrious career.

सौ करोड़ (1991) के निर्माता और निर्देशक देव आनंद थे और उन्होंने फ़िल्म में अभिनय भी किया था। नए अभिनेता फ़ातिमा शेख़ और रमन कपूर इस फ़िल्म में मुख्य प्रेमी जोड़े की भूमिका निभा रहे थे। फ़िल्म की कहानी भारतीय बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी सैय्यद मोदी के जीवन से प्रेरित थी। सैय्यद मोदी की हत्या कर दी गई थी और यह मामला राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर बहुत चर्चा में रहा था फ़िल्म जीवनी तत्वों के साथ रहस्य कथा को मिलाकर पेश कर रही थी जिसने कई आलोचकों को आकर्षित किया, लेकिन फ़िल्म में कलाकारों के घटिया अभिनय की बहुत आलोचना हुई। देव आनंद का सिनेमा में बहुत बड़ा कद है और यह उनका जज़्बा ही था कि वो फ़िल्म पर फ़िल्म बनाते जा रहे थे, लेकिन इस फ़िल्म में बहुत सारी कमियाँ थीं इससे इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता।
फ़िल्म का कथानक सीबीआई इंस्पेक्टर कुमार (देव आनंद) के साथ आगे बढ़ता है। इंस्पेक्टर कुमार लखनऊ में राज (रमन कपूर) की रहस्यमय हत्या की जांच कर रहे हैं। राज की मंगेतर कमलेश (फातिमा शेख) पर तो जैसे दुखों का पहाड़ टूट पड़ा है। फ़िल्म की कहानी खिलाड़ी सैय्यद मोदी की हत्या के असली मामले से बहुत कुछ प्रेरित है। सैय्यद मोदी का लखनऊ के के.डी. सिंह बाबू स्टेडियम में ट्रेनिंग सत्र के बाद रहस्यमय हालातों में क़त्ल हो गया था। इस मामले की जांच ने तब आश्चर्यजनक मोड़ ले लिया था जब पुलिस ने सैय्यद मोदी के क़त्ल की साज़िश के इल्ज़ाम में सैय्यद मोदी की पत्नी अमिता मोदी और उनके प्रेमी राजा संजय सिंह, जो कॉन्ग्रेस पार्टी के राजनेता थे, को प्रमुख अपराधी बनाया था। फ़िल्म में प्रेमी वाला किरदार अभिनेता नसीरुद्दीन शाह ने निभाया है। मामले में जुड़ा राजनैतिक कोण साज़िश और संदेह की नई परतें जोड़ देता है जिससे कथानक और सनसनीखेज़ बन जाता है।
फ़िल्म के संगीतकार बप्पी लाहिड़ी उस दौर में अपने करियर के चरम पर थे, पर उनका संगीत फ़िल्म में कुछ नया नहीं जोड़ पाया। आशा भोंसले, लता मंगेशकर, कुमार सानू, उदित नारायण और अनुराधा पौडवाल जैसे लोकप्रिय गायकों के होने के बावजूद फ़िल्म के गाने लोगों के मन पर प्रभाव डालने में विफल रहे। अवसर होते हुए भी संगीत ने वो काम नहीं किया जो करना चाहिए था। फिल्म के कथानक को और समृद्ध करने में संगीत से मदद नहीं मिली और यह भी फ़िल्म की असफलता के पीछे की एक वजह रही।
टिकट खिड़की पर सौ करोड़ एक बड़ी व्यावसायिक विफलता साबित हुई। मंहगी निर्माण लागत और बड़े सितारों की मौजूदगी के बावजूद फ़िल्म ने एक करोड़ रुपए भी नहीं कमाए और इसे फ्लॉप घोषित किया गया। यह फ़िल्म देखनेवालों के दिलों में जगह नहीं बना पाई। फ़िल्म में कलाकारों का अभिनय कच्चा था और संगीत भी निराशाजनक रहा। इन सब वजहों से यह फ़िल्म देव आनंद के शानदार करियर का एक भूला हुआ अध्याय बन गई।
