Introduction
Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968) Directed by Mahesh Kaul and produced by B. Ananthaswami, the film holds a unique place in Hindi cinema history as the debut film of Hema Malini, who was introduced as the ethereal “Dream Girl.” Starring Raj Kapoor, Tanuja, and Nadira, the film featured music by the iconic duo Shankar-Jaikishan.
The story begins with a flashback to a Diwali night 18 years earlier. Thakur Raibahadur Harnaam Singh (Jayant) is haunted by a dark past—he had fathered a child with a gypsy, who now threatens to expose him unless he marries her. It is then that a mysterious man in khaki attire, red tie, and socks steps into the narrative —Raj Kumar aka Raju (Raj Kapoor)—who claims to bring dreams and hope to the suffering. He encounters the spirited girl, Mahi (Hema Malini), who falls deeply in love with him.
Meanwhile, the Thakur mistreats Ranjana (Tanuja), the daughter of another gypsy and even promises to marry her if no one else will. Mahi, feeling betrayed and insecure, falsely declares she is pregnant by Raju. The village panchayat demands he marry her, but he refuses. A brutal public backlash ensues only to be interrupted by another gypsy woman who dramatically reveals the long-buried truth.
The music, though composed by legends, received a lukewarm response. Standout tracks included Sapnon Ka Saudagar Aaya and Woh Zindagi by Mukesh, Seekha Nahin Sabak Tune by Lata Mangeshkar, and others. This film also marked the beginning of tensions between Lata and Shankar-Jaikishan, who increasingly favoured singer Sharda.
Though a commercial failure, the film spotlighted Hema Malini's beauty and promise. Years later, Raj Kapoor admitted he disliked the film and had taken the role for financial reasons. The significant age gap between Kapoor and Malini—she was the same age as his son Randhir—was cited as one reason for the film's lacklustre reception. Nonetheless, it launched Hema Malini into stardom, and she would go on to dominate Hindi cinema for decades.

फ़िल्म की कहानी अट्ठारह साल पहले की दिवाली की एक रात के फ़्लैशबैक से शुरु होती है। ठाकुर रायबहादुर हरनाम सिंह (जयंत) अपने अतीत के एक काले अध्याय से पीछा छुड़ाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। बहुत साल पहले उनकी एक बंजारन महिला से नाजायज़ संतान पैदा हुई थी और अब वो बंजारन उन्हें धमकी दे रही है कि या तो वे उससे विवाह करें या वह सबको सच बता देगी। इसी समय कहानी में एक रहस्यमय व्यक्ति का आगमन होता है। ख़ाकी पोशाक, लाल टाई और मोजे पहने इस सम्मोहक इंसान का नाम है राज कुमार उर्फ राजू (राज कपूर)। राजू आते ही दावा करता है कि वह दुःख में डूबे लोगों के लिए सपने और उम्मीदें लेकर आया है। उसे एक ज़िन्दादिल और आत्मविश्वास से भरी बंजारन लड़की माही (हेमा मालिनी) मिलती है और राजू उस पर दिलो-जान से फ़िदा हो जाता है।
इधर ठाकुर एक दूसरी बंजारन की बेटी रंजना (तनूजा) के साथ दुर्व्यवहार करता है और यहाँ तक कहता है कि अगर कोई और उससे शादी न करे तो वह खुद कर लेगा। माही अपने को प्रेम में असुरक्षित और ठगा हुआ महसूस करती है और झूठा दावा कर देती है कि उसके पेट में राजू का बच्चा है। गाँव की पंचायत बैठती है। पंचायत राजू को माही से शादी करने को कहती है लेकिन वह इससे इनकार कर देता है। इसके बाद उसे भारी सामाजिक आलोचना और अपमान का सामना करना पड़ता है। पर तभी एक बंजारन महिला नाटकीय रूप से सबके सामने आकर सालों पुराने रहस्य से पर्दा उठा देती है।
हालाँकि इस फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत शंकर-जयकिशन जैसी दिग्गज संगीतकार जोड़ी ने तैयार किया था पर उसे दर्शकों से मिश्रित प्रतिक्रिया ही मिली। फ़िल्म के कुछ उल्लेखनीय गीतों में मुकेश के गाए “सपनों का सौदागर आया” और “वो ज़िंदगी” तथा लता मंगेशकर की आवाज़ में “सीखा नहीं सबक तूने” जैसे गीत प्रमुख रहे। इसी फ़िल्म से लता मंगेशकर और शंकर-जयकिशन के बीच तनाव का आरम्भ भी माना जाता है क्योंकि शंकर-जयकिशन यहाँ अपनी फ़िल्मों में लता के बजाए गायिका शारदा को प्राथमिकता देने लगे थे।
व्यावसायिक रूप से यह फ़िल्म कामयाब नहीं रही लेकिन इसने हेमा मालिनी की खूबसूरती और उनमें मौजूद एक शीर्ष नायिका होने की संभावनाओं को रेखांकित किया। फ़िल्म के नायक राज कपूर ने सालों बाद यह स्वीकार किया कि उन्हें यह फ़िल्म पसंद नहीं आई थी और उन्होंने तो यह भूमिका सिर्फ़ पैसों के लिए की थी। फ़िल्म की मुख्य जोड़ी राज कपूर और हेमा मालिनी के बीच उम्र के बड़े अंतर को भी दर्शकों की ठंडी प्रतिक्रिया का एक कारण माना गया। हेमा मालिनी तो असल में राज कपूर के बेटे रणधीर कपूर की उम्र की थीं। फिर भी इस फ़िल्म ने हेमा मालिनी के लिए हिन्दी सिनेमा का फ़ाटक खोला और आने वाले कई दशकों तक उन्होंने फ़िल्म इंडस्ट्री में शीर्ष नायिका के बतौर काम किया।
