Introduction

Sangdil (1952), directed by R. C. Talwar, was a romantic drama loosely inspired by Charlotte Brontë's 1847 classic novel Jane Eyre. The film stars Dilip Kumar and Madhubala in the lead roles, marking their second collaboration after Tarana (1951). Despite receiving mixed reviews, Sangdil became one of the top-grossing films of 1952, earning ₹0.95 crore at the box office, with a nett of ₹0.5 crore. Box Office India declared it a commercial success.
Set in an Indianized version of the Jane Eyre narrative, the story follows childhood sweethearts Shankar (Dilip Kumar) and Kamala (Madhubala), who are torn apart and raised in vastly different circumstances. Kamala grows up to become a pujaaran (priestess), while Shankar becomes a dejected thakur (landlord). Tragedy strikes when Shankar's life is derailed by his cruel mother's greed. Though fate brings them back together later in life, it is too late for them to achieve the happiness and marital bliss they once dreamt of.
The film's music, composed by Sajjad Hussain with lyrics by Rajinder Krishan, remains iconic. Songs like Dil Mein Sama Gaye, Woh Toh Chalay Gaye, and Kahan Ho Kahan Ho, sung by legends, such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum, and Talat Mehmood, are especially remembered for their emotional depth and haunting melodies.

अभिनेता दिलीप कुमार और मधुबाला मुख्य भूमिकाओं में थे और तराना (1951) के बाद यह साथ में उनकी दूसरी फ़िल्म थी। फ़िल्म को आलोचकों से मिली-जुली प्रतिक्रिया हासिल हुई, लेकिन व्यावसायिक स्तर पर इसने सफलता के झंडे गाड़े। संगदिल 1952 की सबसे ज़्यादा कमाई करने वाली फ़िल्मों में से एक बन गई और टिकट खिड़की पर इसने 95 लाख की कमाई की, जिसमें से 50 लाख शुद्ध मुनाफ़ा था। फ़िल्मों की आर्थिक सफलता का हिसाब रखनेवाली 'बॉक्स ऑफ़िस इंडिया' वेबसाइट ने इसे व्यावसायिक रूप से कामयाब फ़िल्म घोषित किया है।
फ़िल्म में उपन्यास 'जेन आइरे' की कहानी को भारतीय परिवेश में ढालकर पेश किया गया था। बचपन के प्रेमी शंकर (दिलीप कुमार) और कमला (मधुबाला) एक-दूसरे से जुदा कर दिये जाते हैं और बिल्कुल अलग-अलग परिवेश में बड़े होते हैं। कमला बड़ी होकर पुजारन बनती है, जबकि शंकर एक हताश ज़मींदार। शंकर के जीवन में दुखभरा मोड़ तब आता है जब अपनी क्रूर माँ के लालच के चलते उसके जीवन की दिशा बदल जाती है। हालाँकि बाद में किस्मत उन्हें फिर से मिलाती है, लेकिन उनके लिए शादी करने का और जीवन में साथ मिलकर खुशी हासिल करने का समय अब बीत चुका है।
फ़िल्म के लिए तैयार सज्जाद हुसैन का संगीत और राजिंदर कृष्ण के गीत आज भी यादगार हैं। फ़िल्म में लता मंगेशकर, आशा भोंसले, गीता दत्त, शमशाद बेगम और तलत महमूद जैसे शानदार गायकों के गाए "दिल में समा गए", "वो तो चले गए" और "कहाँ हो कहाँ हो" जैसे गाने अपने अल्फ़ाज़ों की जज़्बाती गहराइयों र दिल को छू लेने वाली धुनों के लिए आज भी याद किए जाते हैं।
