Radio Girl (1929) was a silent film directed by Baren Roy and produced in Bombay under the banner of Indira Film Company. The screenplay was written by Baren Rai and R.J. Ruparel, and the film is categorized as an Indo-Pak silent film, reflecting the shared cinematic heritage of the Indian subcontinent before partition. The cast included Malti Devi, Vedi, and Baren Rai in leading roles.
The year 1929 was a pivotal moment in global cinema history, marking the transition from silent films to sound films, also known as "talkies." While The Radio Girl remained a silent production, it was released during a time of rapid technological advancement in filmmaking. रेडियो गर्ल (1929) एक मूक फ़िल्म थी जिसके निर्देशक बारेन रॉय थे। इस फ़िल्म का निर्माण तब की बॉम्बे फ़िल्म इंडस्ट्री में 'इंदिरा फ़िल्म कंपनी' के बैनर तले हुआ था। इसकी पटकथा निर्देशक बारेन रॉय और आर.जे. रुपारेल ने मिलकर लिखी थी और इसे सूची में इसे 'इंडो-पाक' मूक फ़िल्म के रूप में चिह्नित किया गया है जो विभाजन पूर्व भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप की साझा सिनेमाई विरासत का प्रतीक है। इस फ़िल्म में अभिनेत्री मालती देवी, वेदी और बारेन रॉय प्रमुख भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे।
यूँ सन् 1929 विश्व सिनेमा के इतिहास में एक निर्णायक मोड़ की तरह देखा जा सकता है जब फ़िल्म उद्योग मूक फ़िल्मों से सवाक फ़िल्मों की ओर रुख़ कर रहा था। सवाल फ़िल्मों के लिए उन दिनों प्रचलित नाम 'टॉकीज़' था। हालाँकि दि रेडियो गर्ल एक मूक फ़िल्म थी लेकिन इसका प्रदर्शन उस समय हुआ था जब वैश्विक स्तर पर फ़िल्म निर्माण में तकनीकी क्षेत्र में तीव्र प्रगति हो रही थी। अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर उस साल सन् 1929 में ग्लोरिफाइंग द अमेरिकन गर्ल और ऑन विद द शो! जैसी कई ऐतिहासिक फ़िल्में रिलीज़ हुईं। इनमें ऑन विद द शो! को ऐसी पहली फ़ीचर फ़िल्म माना जाता है जो पूरी तरह रंगीन थी और दृश्य से तालमेल वाली ध्वनि के साथ निर्मित हुई थी।
यह हमारे लिए दुर्भाग्य की बात है कि इस दौर की कई फ़िल्में जिनमें 'फ़र्स्ट नेशनल पिक्चर्स' (जिसे बाद में 'वार्नर ब्रदर्स' स्टूडियोज़ ने खरीद लिया) जैसे बड़े स्टूडियो की कुछ शुरुआती फ़िल्में भी शामिल हैं, अभिलेखों को सुरक्षित रखने में हमारी लापरवाही और नाइट्रेट फ़िल्म स्टॉक की नाज़ुक प्रकृति के कारण नष्ट हो चुकी हैं। दि रेडियो गर्ल भी दक्षिण एशिया में निर्मित उस दौर की अधिकांश मूक फ़िल्मों की तरह सुरक्षित नहीं रखी जा सकी, जिसके चलते इसका सटीक मूल्यांकन और इसके सांस्कृतिक प्रभाव पर निर्णय लेना मुश्किल हो जाता है। पर इसके बावजूद यह फ़िल्म भारतीय सिनेमा के शुरुआती वर्षों का एक महत्वपूर्ण सांस्कृतिक दस्तावेज़ मानी जा सकती है।
