Introduction
Raaste Kaa Patthar (1972) is a comedy-drama film directed by Mukul Dutt, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, and Prem Chopra, with Neeta Khayani making her debut. Written by Rahi Masoom Reza and Jayant Dharmadhikari, the film featured a bold and unconventional storyline. Loosely inspired by the 1960 Hollywood classic The Apartment, its theme was later revisited in the 2007 Bollywood film Life in a... Metro, particularly in the characters portrayed by Sharman Joshi, Kay Kay Menon, and Kangana Ranaut.
This was the first film to feature Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha together—close friends during their early struggling days. Bachchan sported a distinctive hairstyle in certain scenes, with hair completely covering his ears, a look he never repeated in any other film.
The plot centres around Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), who lets his superiors use his apartment for their extramarital affairs. His life takes a turn when he falls in love with Neeta (Neeta Khayani), only to discover she is engaged to his boss.
Despite its daring premise, the film did not perform well at the box office. However, similar themes gained popularity years later. The music, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, also failed to make a significant impact. Though the title track Raaste Ka Patthar (sung by Mukesh) gained some recognition, the rest of the soundtrack—including songs like Mujhse Kahan Tu Bachke Jayega, Main Hardam Kisi Ko Dhundta Hoon, and Main Sharab Bechti Hoon by Asha Bhosle—received only a lukewarm response. Interestingly, Main Sharab Bechti Hoon was later sampled in the international album DeXtrA vs Bollywood.
Produced on a budget of approximately ₹1.5 crore (about ₹40.8 crore in 2019), the film earned around ₹1.78 crore (₹48.42 crore in 2019), making it a commercial disappointment at the time.

रास्ते का पत्थर (1972) के निर्देशक मुकुल दत्त थे। यह एक कॉमेडी ड्रामा फ़िल्म थी जिसमें अमिताभ बच्चन, शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा, प्रेम चोपड़ा जैसे अभिनेताओं ने मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभाई थीं। अभिनेत्री नीता ख़यानी ने इस फ़िल्म से अपनी पारी की शुरुआत की। इस फ़िल्म को हिन्दी के चर्चित कथाकार राही मासूम रज़ा और जयंत धर्माधिकारी ने लिखा था और इसका कथानक काफ़ी गैरपारम्परिक और अपने समय के लिए साहसी था। इसकी कहानी हॉलीवुड में निर्मित निर्देशक बिली वाइल्डर की क्लासिक फ़िल्म दि अपार्टमेंट (1960) से प्रेरित थी। कुछ दशक बाद में इसी कहानी को अनुराग बासु निर्देशित हिन्दी सिनेमा की चर्चित फ़िल्म लाइफ़ इन अ... मेट्रो (2007) के एक कथा प्रसंग में फिर से इस्तेमाल किया गया जिसमें शर्मन जोशी, के के मेनन और कंगना रनौत मुख्य किरदार निभा रहे थे।
यह पहली ऐसी फ़िल्म थी जिसमें अमिताभ बच्चन और शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा पर्दे पर साथ नज़र आए थे। अपने शुरुआती संघर्ष के सालों में अमिताभ और शत्रुघ्न अच्छे मित्र रहे थे। बच्चन का इस फ़िल्म के कुछ दृश्यों में एक अनूठा हेयरस्टाइल दिखाई देता है जिसमें उनके बाल पूरी तरह से कानों को ढक रहे थे। बाद में यह लुक उनकी किसी और फ़िल्म में फिर कभी नहीं देखा गया।
फ़िल्म की कहानी जय (अमिताभ बच्चन) के किरदार के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। जय अकेला रहता है। वह अपने वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों को उनके नाजायज़ संबंधों के लिए अपना अपार्टमेंट इस्तेमाल करने को दे देता है। लेकिन उसकी ज़िन्दगी में नया मोड़ तब आता है जब उसे नीता (नीता ख़यानी) से प्रेम हो जाता है। लेकिन कुछ ही समय बाद जय को मालूम होता है कि उसका तो उसी के बॉस के साथ चक्कर चल रहा है।
इस दिलचस्प और गैर-परम्परागत कथानक के बावजूद फ़िल्म को टिकट खिड़की पर कामयाबी हासिल नहीं हुई। बाद के वर्षों में इस किस्म की कहानियाँ चलीं भी, लेकिन रास्ते का पत्थर को वह कामयाबी नसीब नहीं हुई। इस फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत लक्ष्मीकांत-प्यारेलाल की जोड़ी ने तैयार किया था और गीत लिखे थे आनंद बख्शी ने। पर इसका संगीत भी सुननेवालों पर विशेष प्रभाव नहीं छोड़ सका। मुकेश का गाया फ़िल्म का शीर्षक गीत “रास्ते का पत्थर” को तो कुछ पहचान मिली लेकिन फ़िल्म के बाकी गाने जैसे “मुझसे कहाँ तू बचके जाएगा”, “मैं हरदम किसी को ढूंढता हूँ” और आशा भोंसले की आवाज़ में “मैं शराब बेचती हूँ” को ठंडी प्रतिक्रिया ही मिली। दिलचस्प बात है कि बाद में “मैं शराब बेचती हूँ” गीत को अंतरराष्ट्रीय एलबम 'डेक्सट्रा वर्सेस बॉलीवुड' में शामिल किया गया।
