Scene Description Shyamal's parents chance upon their son's house. There is an uncomfortable pause as the old schoolmaster and his wife with her saree wrapped around the head cross the living room full of smoking and drinking guests. They while away their visit enclosed in the bedroom so as to not interrupt the party. They clearly feel out of place. Shyamalendu's humble background is at odds with the heights he has reached, far removed from being a moustached, cycling, student of English literature in Patna before he joined Hindustan Peters.
