Scene Description Ghasiram directs Dukhi to chop up a large log of wood near the house. The log of wood becomes a silent, inexorable demon to Dukhi who cannot show his frustration to the brahman on face in fear of his daughter's future. The log is a gnarled lump some four or five feet long and up to maybe two and a half feet thick; Dukhi's unsuccessful attempt to roll it over is some indication of its weight. Dukhi has a blunt, small-headed axe. The demon log has a formidable accomplice- the scorching Indian summer. Dukhi has to battle this foe with an inadequate weapon, not fully recovered from fever and on an empty stomach.(7/24)
