Film Title

Sadgati (Salvation, Deliverance), 1981, India, Hindi

Scene Description The first we see of Ghasiram is of a man sitting before a mirror, absorbed in the business of decorating his forehead in preparation for the performance of his morning rituals. Unlike Dukhi he is a man of ample build and whiter skin, living in a fine house. We see Dukhi become the obsequious petitioner who, because of fthe act of birth, must prostrate himself before another man. Ghasiram on this hot day, is somewhat disinclined to visit the nearby hovel of a chamar in order to consult his almanac to find an auspicious day for the betrothal of the untouchable's daughter. Of course, he cannot refuse to go—that would be a breach of his own duty—and so he prevaricates, keeping Dukhi busy in the meantime with menial tasks to which one such as Ghasiram may never stoop.
