Film Title

Pratidwandi (The Adversary, Siddhartha and the City), 1970, India, Bengali

Scene Description Siddhartha lets Sutapa's boss know with her consent that Sutapa is strained from work and should be let go. Sutapa confidently disregards this action, as men are no longer guardians who determine the woman's involvement in the workplace. Ignoring what the absence of her income can do to the household, Siddhartha gives precedence to Sutapa's spocial dignity. Instead, Sutapa shows her brother the dance steps she has learned at classes after work. Siddhartha pictures her dancing in the arms of a man, even smoking a cigarette and it is iconoclastic- Sutapa is no longer his innocent little sister but a woman of the world. (10/27)
