Film TitlePather Panchali (Song of the Little Road), 1955, India, Bengali
Scene DescriptionDurga suffers from a long period of illness, likely Malaria, which was a mass-killling epidemic in Bengal. Her exposure to the elements, the dilapidated house, lack of nutrition and medical care in acute poverty worsened it. The morning after a stormy night, when Harihar was still away, she passed. Sarbojaya is pictured here sitting with her first child's lifeless body lying snugly close to her womb. Her kin comes at Apu's beckoning and sees her mute and colourless face. (7/9)
