Film TitleGhare Baire (The Home and the World), 1985, India, Bengali
Scene DescriptionBimala tries her newly stitched jackets as her elder sister-in-law observes. Her sister-in-law is introduced in Bimala's narrative as one of the tragic examples in the family, of girls married as children and widowed soon after, only to live the rest of their lives in austere confinement. Her husband, Nikhil's elder brother, wasted himself and never acknowledged her when he was alive. The tension between her and Bimala is represented by a sad and pathetic contrast between the progressive and traditional, and moreover of the lucky and unlucky one. (4/39)
