Film Title

Ghare Baire (The Home and the World), 1985, India, Bengali

Scene Description Vital to the credibility of the film is the character of Bimala, Nikhil's wife who has been married to him for ten years now. She is literate, intelligent and readily takes to the study of English language and music that Nikhil urges her to qualify in. Nikhil is an educated, progressive, and modern individual who doesn't agree that his wife should remain in purdah. Neither can he come to terms with the fact that their marriage, though one of love and companionship, has been imposed on Bimala at a young age. He is intrigued about her own choice and believes that she should be independent. One Miss Gilby is seen in this scene with Bimala, conducting a singing lesson. She is her white tutor. (2/39)
