Scene Description In one of the rare occasions of the film, Doyamoyee is pictured in her private space with her husband Umaprasad. Umaprasad, unlike his antiquated father or his elder brother, is an English educated cosmopolitan man, influenced by the Young Bengal Movement. He has internalized the teachings of Rammohan Roy and Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, left behind the orthodoxy of Hinduism and the fanaticism of his father. He is about to graduate from University in the city and wishes for his wife to accompany him to an overseas working position. He wants her to write to him everyday. A juxtaposition of the relationship between them, and the relationship between his father and Doya, or the one between his elder brother and sister-in-law, is very telling; Uma considers his wife an individual being with her own wishes, not denying the fact of her being a child, while the other men project archetypal roles onto women.
