Charulata (The Lonely Wife), 1964, India, Bengali
Scene Description Bhupati is too quick to bestow faith on people and it has caused a monumental blunder. The enterprise of his beloved press is ruined, his reputation is tainted in the market. Unable to rage at the betrayal, Bhupati sits crestfallen in his empty press. Amal is further determined not to trifle with his brother's life. He leaves without so much as confiding in Charu. And he leaves behind the slippers she embroidered for him, as a sign of rejecting her love. Charu is shattered. But Bhupati is free of Charu's 'rival wife' now, as he jokingly referred to The Sentinel once. But the fact of Charu's love for his brother resurfaces to perhaps foil his plans to devote himself to her, who knows, if forever. (14/14)
