Film Title

Charulata (The Lonely Wife), 1964, India, Bengali

Scene Description On the night of Bhupati's celebration of the Liberals' election victory in England there is a cut to a close shot of a perturbed look on Amal's face over which we hear a singer in the next room singing Rammohan Roy's words, 'In truth and renunciation lies the way'. Charu's passion has led Amal to renounce her. It only takes him too long to understand that she understands their relationship differently than he does, therefore he has to inevitably leave because his original obligation belongs to his elder brother.
