Film Title

Charulata (The Lonely Wife), 1964, India, Bengali

Scene Description A proposal for marriage has come for Amal. Bhupati reveals to him that the would-be-bride is educated and beautiful, and comes with a handsomely rich father wanting to sponsor the son-in-law's studies in England. Amal is tempted for a moment but soon loses determination. It is interesting to note Charu's seeming acquiescence in the proposal, accepting what is inevitable in Amal's life. But her composure and underlying conviction that Amal will never leave her is piqued when he publishes his poetry and breaks their secret pact. (8/14)
