Charulata (The Lonely Wife), 1964, India, Bengali
Scene Description Charu has learnt incidentally that it has been at Bhupati's request that Amal was encouraging her writing; she feels patronised when the deception in the seeming naturalness of their joint literary endeavour is revealed. Charu publishes her own poetry in an even more respected journal and earns acclaim that surpasses Amal's first publication. But she makes plain that she has published her work only in defiance; she embraces Amal and sobs on his chest begging him not to leave. Only then Amal realises that he has become involved in something dangerously profound, Charu has replaced Bhupati with him. He was playing the role of a friend and entertainer and did not wish for this to happen. He has to abandon the house and Charu, in order to remain faithful to his brother.(11/14)
