Film Title

Charulata (The Lonely Wife), 1964, India, Bengali

Scene Description On the night of Bhupati's celebration, Charulata's brother Umaprasad, on whom Bhupati naively bestowed the responsibility of finances, reveals his treacherous plan of swindling the press's money to his wife, Manda. For better or for worse, she follows him without abetting or censuring him. Her work is to please everyone around her, to be able to slide in life. _x000d_ It is perhaps easy to lay all the blame at Bhupati's feet for losing his goodwill and the sanctity of his home by trusting the people who are socially and predictably in a position from where they'd fail him.
