Charulata (The Lonely Wife), 1964, India, Bengali
Scene Description Manda exists to make Charulata look more distinctive than the 'other women' of her time. Manda is unlettered and rather rustic in the simple way she talks louder than it's appropriate, laughs too much and feels satisfied in the game of cards which Charu finds mindless. At the same time, Manda is everything that Charu isn't. She is comfortable in her skin and astute enough to understand that Charu feels differently about her intimacy with Amal. Amal toys with Manda when Charu is cross, because as a matter of fact, it doesn't bother Amal. He is too full of liveliness to distinguish between Manda offering him paan and Charu demanding to make his paan for him. (7/14)
