Scene Description The adolescent Apu is introduced to a wider world outside the narrow circumspect of religion through the encouraging guidance of the headmaster (unlike the pedagogue-grocer of the previous Pather Panchali) in his village paathshala; he begins to dream. Against his mother's wish, Apu decides to move to Calcutta to enroll at a college. Though she fears that her son will part forever, Sarbajaya supports him. Apu goes to the big city. Sarbajaya falls ill and dies. (9/12)
