Film Title

Abhijan (The Expedition), 1962, India, Bengali

Scene Description Gulabi (exceptionally well portrayed by Waheeda Rahman) has been acquired by Sukhanram to serve his associates, sexually. Clearly, she has been trafficked into the place and hates it. Gulabi remembers her bleak past, while staying hidden at Narsingh's quarters. Her mother died at her birth. She was raped as a young girl and her family beat her up for this 'sin', locked her without food or water for seven days. She contemplated suicide but gave up on the thought when life seemed so much dearer - the Dussehra festival, her friend's wedding are simple joys she wouldn't give up for anything. Narsingh is visibly moved by her candour. They had spent the last night together after Nilima had disappointed Narsingh by revealing her love for another man she wanted to marry. (3/4)
