However, over the decades, these tracks have found appreciation among retro music lovers.

फ़िल्म की कहानी रीना (नंदा) के किरदार के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। रीना एक अमीर कॉलेज छात्रा है और अपने जीवन की नीरसता के चलते मोहभंग का शिकार हो चुकी है। जीवन में किसी अर्थ की तलाश करते हुए वह छात्र आंदोलन में शामिल हो जाती है। रीना अपने पारिवारिक डॉक्टर समर चौधरी के प्रति आकर्षित हो जाती है। उसकी भावनात्मक उथल-पुथल तब और गहरी हो जाती है जब वह एक नाइटक्लब में गानेवाले गायक से प्रेम करने लगती है। लेकिन वह युवा उसे अस्वीकार कर देता है और इसके चलते रीना नशे की गिरफ़्त में डूब जाती है। उसका परिवार उसकी ज़िन्दगी को वापस पटरी पर लाने के उद्देश्य से उसकी शादी डॉक्टर समर (रंजीत मल्लिक) से करवा देता है लेकिन रीना की नशे की लत छूटती नहीं। कहानी में एक निर्णायक मोड़ तब आता है जब रीना एक गोलीकांड में फंस जाती है और उसे जेल की सज़ा भुगतने के खतरे का सामना करना पड़ता है।
इस फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत सपन चक्रवर्ती ने तैयार किया था और गीतों के बोल आनंद बक्शी ने लिखे थे। इस फ़िल्म की तरह इसके गीत भी शुरुआत में कोई ख़ास प्रभाव नहीं छोड़ पाए। किशोर कुमार का गाया “एक लड़की ले गई दिल”, लता मंगेशकर का गाया “आओ करें बातें” और आशा भोंसले के गाए दो एकल गीत “मुझसे ऐसी भूल हुई” और “कश पे कश लगाने दे” मधुर तो थे लेकिन व्यावसायिक रूप से कामयाब नहीं रहे। हालाँकि आज दशकों बाद ये गाने पुराने फ़िल्म संगीत के प्रेमियों के बीच सराहे जाने लगे हैं।
नया नशा की रिलीज़ से पहले ही अभिनेत्री नंदा ने फ़िल्मों से संन्यास लेने का निर्णय ले लिया था। शुरुआती हिट फ़िल्म छोटी बहन (1959) में बलराज साहनी की बहन की भूमिका निभाकर पहचान बनाने वाली नंदा ने कामयाबी मिलने के बावजूद हमेशा एक शांत और निजी जीवन जीना पसन्द किया। शोहरत के जाल से खुद को दूर रखने की सदा इच्छुक रही नंदा ने फ़िल्मों को अलविदा कहने का मन पहले ही बना लिया था, बस वे इस भूमिका के प्रति जनता की प्रतिक्रिया का इंतज़ार कर रही थीं। टिकट खिड़की पर फ़िल्म को मिली ठंडी प्रतिक्रिया और आलोचकों द्वारा रीना के चरित्र को खारिज करना उनके निर्णय को दृढ़ बना गया। ख़ासकर एक दृश्य में जिसमें रीना “नैतिकता” पर लिखी एक मोटी हस्तलिखित किताब खरीदती है लेकिन फिर दोस्तों के बुलाने पर पार्टी में जाने के लिए उसे फेंक देती है, आलोचकों के निशाने पर रहा। इसके बाद उन्होंने चुनिन्दा फ़िल्मों में ही काम किया जैसे राज कपूर की प्रेम रोग (1982) रवि चोपड़ा की मज़दूर (1983) और सिब्ते हसन रिज़वी के निर्माण में बनी इस्माइल श्रॉफ़ की आहिस्ता आहिस्ता (1981) जैसी चंद फ़िल्में।
नया नशा टिकट खिड़की पर असफल रही। दर्शकों को रीना का चरित्र अविश्वसनीय लगा। आलोचकों ने उसके माता-पिता के किरदारों के चित्रण की भी आलोचना की और उन्हें उच्चवर्ग के लापरवाह अमीरों का बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर किया गया कैरिकेचर बताया गया। इसके बावजूद नया नशा भारतीय सिनेमा के इतिहास में एक दिलचस्प हस्तक्षेप के रूप में दर्ज है। यह एक साहसिक फ़िल्म थी जिसने शहरी समृद्धि की ठसक के पीछे छिपी अंधेरी परछाई को दिखाने का जोखिम उठाया।
