Introduction

Naseeb is a quintessential Manmohan Desai masala film that follows the intertwined lives of four friends, each caught in the vicissitudes of fate, with drama, comedy, action, and romance all in the same package. The plot revolves around themes of friendship, loss, and justice, while offering the masala flair that was Desai's signature style. The story revolves around four friends, Namdev (Pran), Damu (Amjad Khan), Jaggi (Kader Khan), and Raghubir (Jagdish Raj), who win a lottery ticket but fall into conflict over the prize. Their betrayal leads to Namdev's wrongful imprisonment and the dispersal of his family. Years later, Namdev's sons, Johnny(Amitabh Bachchan) and Sunny(Rishi Kapoor), are raised in hardship but grow up determined to reunite their family.

The memorable character of Amitabh's John Jaani Janardhan, symbolises the seamless coexistence of Hindu, Muslim, and Christian identities, reflecting the recurring theme of communal harmony in Desai's films. The film's visual spectacle and ambitious storytelling are underscored by the epic song, titled “John Jaani Janardhan,” which features an ensemble of Bollywood stars in guest appearances. Years later, this concept was reprised in Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om(2007). This message of harmony, symbolised by John's declaration in the song lyrics, “John Jaani Janardhan, ye teeno naam hain mere, Allah, Jesus aur Ram hain mere”, is a celebration and call for religious inclusivity through Desai bringing attention to the multicultural fabric of India. It comes as no surprise that the name of the character played by Pran (Namdev) comes from the 15th century poet-saint of the same name, whose hymns echoing spirit of unity and critiques of societal hypocrisy are sung by Hindus and Sikhs both, transcending religious divides.

नसीब फ़िल्मी मसालों से भरी एक ठेठ मनमोहन देसाई फ़िल्म है जो किस्मत के अजब खेल में फंसे चार दोस्तों की आपस में उलझी ज़िन्दगियों की कहानी कहती है। किसी टिपिकल मनमोहन देसाई फॉर्मूला फ़िल्म की तरह यहाँ भी ड्रामा, कॉमेडी, एक्शन और रोमांस सभी को एक ही कहानी में पिरो दिया गया है। कहानी दोस्ती, बलिदान, इंसाफ़ जैसे मुद्दों के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है लेकिन देसाई की अपनी ख़ास छप्पन-भोग की थाली वाली मसाला शैली कहानी की रोचकता ज़रा भी कम नहीं होने देती। फ़िल्म की कहानी नामदेव (प्राण), दामू (अमजद खान), जग्गी (कादर खान) और रघुबीर (जगदीश राज) नाम के चार दोस्तों के बारे में है जो एक लॉटरी टिकट जीत जाते हैं लेकिन पुरस्कार की राशि को लेकर उनके बीच झगड़ा हो जाता है। दोस्तों का विश्वासघात नामदेव को झूठे आरोप में जेल भिजवा देता है और उसका परिवार बिखर जाता है। बहुत सालों बाद मुफ़लिसी और संघर्ष में पलकर बड़े हुए नामदेव के बेटे जॉनी (अमिताभ बच्चन) और सनी (ऋषि कपूर) अपने परिवार को फिर से एकजुट करने की कसम खाते हैं।

फ़िल्म में 'जॉन जॉनी जनार्दन' नाम का अमिताभ का निभाया यादगार किरदार हिन्दू, मुस्लिम और ईसाई पहचानों के सहज सहअस्तित्व को दिखाता है। देसाई की फ़िल्मों में सांप्रदायिक भाइचारे के ऐसे प्रतीक खूब देखे जाते हैं। फिल्म की संयोगों से भरी घटनाप्रधान कहानी और महत्वाकांक्षी दृश्य परिकल्पना अपने चरम पर “जॉन जॉनी जनार्दन” गाने के साथ पहुँचती है जिसमें हिन्दी सिनेमा के कई बड़े सितारे मेहमान भूमिका में अपनी झलक दिखाने पर्दे पर आते हैं। कुछ दशक बाद निर्देशक फ़राह खान की ओम शांति ओम (2007) में इस महत्वाकांक्षी प्रयोग को दोहराया गया। साम्प्रदायिक सौहार्द्र का यह संदेश आनंद बक्शी के लिखे इस गाने के बोलों में भी साफ़ दोहराया जाता है जब जॉन गाता है, “जॉन जॉनी जनार्दन, ये तीनों नाम हैं मेरे, अल्लाह, जीसस और राम हैं मेरे” इन बोलों में देसाई का भारत की सांस्कृतिक विविधता को रेखांकित करना और उस विविधता में मौजूद समावेशी एकता का उल्लासपूर्ण उत्सव साफ़ पढ़ा जा सकता है। फिर इसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं होना चाहिए कि फ़िल्म में प्राण द्वारा निभाए गए चरित्र का नाम तेरहवीं-चौदहवीं सदी में महाराष्ट्र में हुए इसी नाम के प्रसिद्ध भक्ति कवि संत नामदेव के नाम से लिया गया है, जिनके भजन समाज में मौजूद धार्मिक पाखंड की आलोचना करते हैं और समावेशी पंथ के पक्ष में खड़े होते हैं। आज भी उनकी लोकप्रियता मजहब की दीवारों के परे जाती हैं और उनके भजन गानेवालों में सभी जाति-धर्म के लोग शामिल हैं।
