नल दमयंती (1945) एक पौराणिक कथा पर आधारित प्रेमकथा थी। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी का आधार महाभारत की प्रसिद्ध नल और दमयंती की प्रेम कहानी है। इस कथा में राजा नल और राजकुमारी दमयंती के बीच प्रेम की गहराई को दिखाया गया है। यह ऐसा एकनिष्ठ प्रेम है जिसे भाग्य बार-बार चुनौती देता है। भाग्य का खेल ऐसा कि एक जुए की बाज़ी में राज नल अपना सबकुछ हार जाता है और दमयंती से भी बिछड़ जाता है। लेकिन अनेक कठिनाइयों और संघर्षों के बावजूद आखिर में वे दोनों फिर मिलते हैं। नल-दमयंती की यह पौराणिक कथा प्रेम, बलिदान और सत्यनिष्ठा जैसे शाश्वत मूल्यों को फ़िल्म के कथानक में पिरो देती है।
इस फिल्म का निर्माण 'जनक पिक्चर्स' के बैनर तले हुआ था और इसका निर्देशन कुमार सेन समर्थ ने किया था। इस फ़िल्म में उस समय के प्रमुख कलाकार शोभना समर्थ, दलपत, गुलाब, पृथ्वी, त्रिलोक कपूर, मिश्रा और डेविड जैसे अभिनेता भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे। एक रोचक तथ्य यह भी है कि फ़िल्म की नायिका शोभना समर्थ ने बाद में इस फ़िल्म के निर्देशक और छायाकार कुमार सेन समर्थ से विवाह किया था।
