Introduction

Manzil (1936) was a classic bilingual adaptation of the 1920 novel Grihadah by the renowned author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Directed by P.C. Barua, the film masterfully brings to life the emotionally intricate narrative of love, loyalty, and societal constraints. The Bengali version of the film retained Grihadaha as the film's title.
At the heart of Manzil lies a complex love triangle involving three principal characters: Achala, Mahim, and Suresh. Achala, a strong and conflicted woman, is initially engaged to Mahim and eventually marries him. However, their seemingly stable relationship begins to unravel when Suresh, Mahim's friend, becomes deeply infatuated with Achala. His unreciprocated passion gradually intrudes upon their lives, leading to emotional turmoil and tension.
The story is more than just a tale of romantic entanglement. It explores themes of social prejudice, religious divisions, and class distinctions, delving into the struggles of individuals navigating rigid societal expectations. Through its portrayal of love, betrayal, and moral dilemma, Manzil presents a poignant reflection on the sacrifices made in the name of duty and the pain of unfulfilled desires.
The film featured a stellar ensemble cast led by Prithviraj Kapoor and Krishna Chandra, with notable performances by Boken Chatto, Jamuna, Molina Devi, Pahahi Sanyal, Biswanath Bhaduri, Miss Harimati, Sitara Devi, Anupam Ghatak, and P.C. Barua himself.
Writing credits were shared between Munshi Arzoo and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, preserving the emotional depth and nuance of the original literary work. The film's visual storytelling was elevated by the cinematography of Bimal Roy, who would later become one of Indian cinema's most revered directors. Subodh Mitra served as the editor, shaping the narrative with finesse.
The evocative music, composed by Rai Chand Boral and Pankaj Mullick, added further emotional resonance to the film, with lyrics penned by Munshi Arzoo.
Upon release, Manzil was met with critical acclaim and commercial success. It was particularly praised for its powerful performances, sensitive direction, and its faithful yet cinematic adaptation of the novel. मंज़िल (1936) की कहानी प्रसिद्ध लेखक शरतचंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय के सन् 1920 में प्रकाशित उपन्यास गृहदाह पर आधारित थी और 'न्यू थियेटर्स' के बैनर तले दो भाषाओं में समांतर रूप से इसका निर्माण हुआ था। बांग्ला भाषा में इसका नाम गृहदाह ही रखा गया था। इसके निर्देशक प्रथमेश चंद्र बरुआ थे और फ़िल्म का कथानक प्रभावशाली ढंग से प्रेम, निष्ठा, वफ़ादारी जैसे मूल्यों से बुनी कथा को सामाजिक बंधनों में उलझी भावनात्मक कहानी के रूप में पेश करता था।
गृहदाह की कथा के केंद्र में तीन किरदार थे जिनके नाम अचला, महीम और सुरेश थे। फ़िल्म का कथानक एक जटिल प्रेम त्रिकोण पर आधारित है। अचला (जमुना) एक मज़बूत आधुनिका स्त्री है जिसका मन द्वंद्व में उलझा हुआ है। दूसरी ओर दो नौजवान हैं जो आपस में गहरे दोस्त हैं। इनमें एक महीम (पहाड़ी सान्याल) है जो पढ़ा-लिखा नौजवान है और एक गरीब घर से आता है। दूसरा सुरेश (पृथ्वीराज कपूर) है जो रईस है लेकिन स्वभाव से रूढ़िवादी है। अचला पहले महीम से विवाह करती है और उसके साथ गाँव जाकर रहने लगती है। लेकिन उनके बीच का वैवाहिक संबंध तब डगमगाने लगता है जब महीम के मित्र सुरेश का उनके जीवन में पुनरागमन होता है। अचला के प्रति सुरेश की गहरी आसक्ति उनके संबंध को बदलने लगती है। सुरेश का एकतरफ़ा प्यार धीरे-धीरे अचला और महीम के वैवाहिक जीवन में हस्तक्षेप करने लगता है और जज़्बाती तूफ़ान और तनाव को जन्म देता है।
यह कहानी केवल एक प्रेम त्रिकोण भर नहीं है। यह सामाजिक पूर्वाग्रहों, धार्मिक विभाजन और समाज में पैठे वर्गभेद को भी गहराई तक जाकर उजागर करती है और उन इंसानों के जीवनसंघर्ष को दिखाती है जो कठोर सामाजिक रूढ़ियों के बीच कैद अपना रास्ता खोज रहे हैं। प्रेम, विश्वासघात और किरदारों के नैतिक द्वंद्व को कथा में पिरोते हुए मंज़िल कर्तव्यों की पूर्ती के नाम पर क़त्ल होती अधूरी इंसानी इच्छाओं से उपजी पीड़ा का मार्मिक चित्रण पेश करती है।
फ़िल्म के प्रमुख अभिनेताओं में पृथ्वीराज कपूर, कृष्णा चंद्रा, बोकेन चट्टो, जमुना, मोलीना देवी, पहाड़ी सान्याल, विश्वनाथ भादुड़ी, मिस हरिमती, सितारा देवी, अनुपम घटक और स्वयं पी. सी. बरुआ शामिल थे। इस फ़िल्म की पटकथा लेखन का श्रेय मुंशी आरज़ू और शरतचंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय को जाता है जिन्होंने मूल साहित्यिक कृति की भावनात्मक गहराई और कथानक की संवेदनशीलता को बचाए रखा।
इस फ़िल्म की सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी की ज़िम्मेदारी उस दौर में 'न्यू थियेटर्स' के साथ काम कर रहे बिमल राय ने संभाली थी। उनकी सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी ने फ़िल्म के दृश्यात्मक विधान को एक नई ऊँचाई दी। खुद बिमल राय आगे जाकर भारतीय सिनेमा के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित निर्देशकों में से एक बने। फ़िल्म के संपादन की जिम्मेदारी सुबोध मित्रा ने संभाली और उन्होंने अपने कुशल संपादन से कथानक को आकार दिया।
रायचंद बोराल और पंकज मल्लिक द्वारा रचा गया फ़िल्म का मार्मिक संगीत कहानी की भावनात्मक तीव्रता को और गहराई देनेवाला रहा। इस फ़िल्म के लिए गीत मुंशी आरज़ू ने लिखे थे।
फ़िल्म की रिलीज़ के बाद मंज़िल और गृहदाह को दोनों भाषाओं में आलोचनात्मक प्रशंसा और व्यावसायिक कामयाबी हासिल हुई। अभिनेताओं के प्रभावशाली अभिनय, संवेदनशील निर्देशन और उपन्यास के ईमानदारी भरे किंतु सिनेमा के अनुरूप कुशल रूपांतरण के लिए फ़िल्म को विशेष तारीफ़ मिली। इस फ़िल्म ने दर्शकों के मन को गहरे छुआ और बांग्ला सिनेमा तथा हिन्दी सिनेमा दोनों में शरतचंद्र के साहित्य को लोकप्रिय बनाने में इस फ़िल्म की अहम भूमिका रही।
