Kartoos (1999) An action thriller directed by Mahesh Bhatt, featuring Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, and Manisha Koirala in the lead roles, with notable supporting performances by Gulshan Grover and Jaspal Bhatti, the film marked Bhatt's final directorial venture for over two decades, until his return with Sadak 2 in 2020.
The narrative draws inspiration from the 1993 Hollywood film Point of No Return, itself a remake of the French classic La Femme Nikita. Sanjay Dutt's character closely parallels the role portrayed by Bridget Fonda in the American adaptation. The film was later remade in Tamil as Paramasivan (2006).
The story centres around ACP Jay Suryavanshi (Jackie Shroff), a determined police officer who recruits and trains a hardened criminal, Raja (Sanjay Dutt), to assassinate underworld don Jagat Jogia (Gulshan Grover). To monitor Raja's movements, Jay surgically implants a tracking device in his leg after deliberately shooting him during a failed escape attempt. As Raja carries out the mission—extending even to the United Kingdom—he falls in love with Mini (Manisha Koirala), despite being explicitly forbidden to do so. After eliminating Jogia and his gang, Raja is ultimately granted freedom by Jay and begins a new life with Mini.
The film's music was composed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Anu Malik, and Bally Sagoo, with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Among the soundtrack, Ishq Da Rutba (sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) and Gham Hai Ya Khushi (sung by Alka Yagnik) emerged as notable hits, while other tracks—such as Wallah Yeh Ladki, Teri Yaad, O Rabba, and Baha Na Aansoo—achieved moderate popularity.
Released on May 7, 1999, it is Bhatt's last film as a director before he stepped away from filmmaking to concentrate on screenwriting and production. He came back to wield the megaphone with Sadak 2 in 2020. Although some contemporary accounts described its box office performance as average and highlighted its popular soundtrack, official records categorise the film as a commercial failure.
