Junoon1992
Introduction
Junoon (Obsession -1992) A fantasy horror film directed by Mahesh Bhatt, it stars Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Roy as a young man who is cursed to become a tiger every full moon night. Junoon was reportedly inspired by the 1981 film An American Werewolf in London (1981), while adapting its premise to an Indian emotional and cultural landscape. It occupies a distinctive place in Hindi cinema as a fantasy horror film that daringly fused romantic melodrama with supernatural terror.
At the heart of the story lies the tragic figure of Vikram (Rahul Roy), a young man whose life is irreversibly altered during a fateful hunting expedition. Ignoring ominous warnings from tribal villagers about a cursed tiger spirit haunting the jungle, Vikram and his companion press on, only to be attacked. While his friend is killed, Vikram survives after slaying the beast—unaware that he has inherited its curse, condemning him to transform into a ferocious tiger on every full-moon night.
During his recovery, Vikram becomes obsessively enamoured of Dr. Nita (Pooja Bhatt), a compassionate young woman already in love with Ravi (Avinash Wadhawan), an aspiring singer. As the darkness within Vikram intensifies, he manipulates circumstances to sabotage the lovers' elopement, leading Nita to believe she has been abandoned. Emotionally shattered, she consents to marry Vikram, only to confront horror on their wedding night when the full moon triggers his monstrous metamorphosis and a trail of brutal killings.
The narrative culminates in a race against time, as Nita and Ravi reunite to uncover the truth. Guided by folklore and a local priest, they learn that only a sacred dagger hidden in a cave can end Vikram's life without perpetuating the curse.
Supported by a strong ensemble cast and a widely popular soundtrack by Nadeem–Shravan—featuring hits such as Prem Prem O Meri Dilruba and Waqt Kate Nahin Kat Ta Hai—it was also notable for its then-impressive morphing visual effects. A commercial success with favourable reviews, the film remains a memorable experiment in Indian horror cinema.
