Introduction
A film produced by Bombay Talkies and directed by Franz Osten, Jeevan Prabhat was a poignant social drama that delved into issues, such as, rural caste divisions and polygamy. The film effectively addresses the social evils of the caste system and the stigma surrounding remarriage. With its themes resonating deeply with audiences, the film stood out for its exploration of these critical societal issues.
The film starred Devika Rani, whose performance was highly praised. Kishore Sahu made his acting debut, while actress Renuka Devi also made her debut in a notable role. The supporting cast included Mumtaz Ali, Maya Devi, and M. Nazir. The film's music was composed by Saraswati Devi, with lyrics and dialogues by J. S. Casshyap and a screenplay written by Niranjan Pal.
Set in a rural village, the story centres around a young Brahmin couple, Nandlal (Mumtaz Ali) and Uma (Devika Rani), who face the emotional struggle of being unable to have children. To address this, Nandlal decides to take a second wife, Padma. Uma, unable to conceive, is sent back to her father's home. There, she rekindles a friendship with her childhood companion Ramu (Kishore Sahu), a Harijan from a potter's family. This renewed connection leads to societal censure and misunderstandings, particularly from her husband and the community, due to the rigid caste norms that define the boundaries of acceptable relationships.
Jeevan Prabhat received a positive reception, running for over 17 weeks in Bombay and achieving commercial success across the country. The film's music, composed by Saraswati Devi, featured popular songs like “Tum Meri Tum Mere Sajan,” “Ek Chandi Ka Hai Mandir Sone Ki Murat Sundar,” “Kyun Janam Diya Bhagwan Gar Ro Ro Ke Marna Tha,” and “Chale Thay Bade Dushman-e-Jaan Bankar.” These songs became hugely popular, adding to the film's cultural impact. Renuka Devi, while praised for her appearance, faced criticism for her acting, which was considered less impressive. Kishore Sahu's performance, despite his good looks, was regarded as a disappointment by critics, falling short of expectations.
फ़िल्म में देविका रानी मुख्य भूमिका में थीं और उनके अभिनय को विशेष रूप से सराहना मिली। जीवन प्रभात के साथ ही अभिनेता किशोर साहू और अभिनेत्री रेणुका देवी ने अपने अभिनय करियर की शुरुआत की। फ़िल्म के अन्य सहायक कलाकारों में मुमताज़ अली, माया देवी और एम. नज़ीर शामिल थे। इस फ़िल्म का संगीत सरस्वती देवी ने तैयार किया था जबकि गीत और संवाद जे. एस. कश्यप ने लिखे थे। फ़िल्म की पटकथा निरंजन पाल ने लिखी थी।
फ़िल्म की कहानी एक गाँव की है जहाँ रहनेवाले एक नौजवान ब्राह्मण दंपति नंदलाल (मुमताज़ अली) और उमा (देविका रानी) निःसंतान हैं और बच्चे की चाह में दुखी रहते हैं। बच्चे की चाहत में नंदलाल पद्मा नाम की स्त्री से दूसरी शादी करने का फैसला करता है। इधर नि:संतान उमा को उसके मायके वापस भेज दिया जाता है। मायके में उमा की मुलाकात अपने बचपन के मित्र रामू (किशोर साहू) से होती है। रामू एक हरिजन कुम्हार परिवार से है। पर उसके और उमा के बीच बढ़ती नज़दीकियाँ दोनों के बीच खड़ी जातिभेद की दीवार के चलते समाज के ठेकेदारों को तनिक नहीं सुहाती। उमा का पति नंदलाल इसे बर्दाश्त नहीं कर पाता और इससे गलतफ़हमियाँ जन्म लेती हैं।
जीवन प्रभात को दर्शकों ने पसन्द किया। यह फ़िल्म बम्बई शहर में 17 हफ़्तों से अधिक चली और पूरे देश में व्यावसायिक रूप से सफल रही। फ़िल्म में सरस्वती देवी का संगीत था। इसके कई गानों जैसे “तुम मेरी तुम मेरे साजन”, “एक चांदी का है मंदिर, सोने की मूरत सुंदर”, “क्यों जनम दिया भगवान, गर रो-रो के मरना था” और “चले थे बड़े दुश्मन-ए-जान बनकर” को अच्छी लोकप्रियता हासिल हुई और इसने फ़िल्म के सांस्कृतिक महत्व में इज़ाफ़ा किया। अभिनेत्री रेणुका देवी के सौंदर्य की तारीफ़ हुई लेकिन उनके अभिनय को आलोचना का सामना करना पड़ा। अभिनेता किशोर साहू भी अपनी पहली फ़िल्म में सुलोचन व्यक्तित्व और आकर्षक चेहरे-मोहरे के चलते सराहे गए लेकिन उनका अभिनय आलोचकों की कसौटी पर खरा नहीं उतरा।
