Introduction

Insaniyat (1955) is an action and costume drama film produced and directed by S. S. Vasan. It is notable for being the only film in which two of Hindi cinema's greatest stars, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand, acted together. At the peak of their careers, both were highly popular, yet often rivals, as fans and critics frequently compared their popularity. Dilip Kumar, however, once clarified to a journalist that they were “not enemies.” The two, along with Raj Kapoor, formed a celebrated trio, and though they were often competitors onscreen, they remained friends offscreen, offering each other critical insights into their films and performances.
The story of Insaniyat was credited to the Gemini Studio's story department, with dialogues written by Ramanand Sagar. However, despite the star power, the film did not become the anticipated “clash of the titans.” Dilip Kumar, in an author-backed role as Mangal, clearly stole the show. This was the only time in his career when Dev Anand, playing Bhanu, appeared in a rural adventure costume drama. Technically, Anand was the lead hero, as his character, Bhanu, had the heroine, Bina Rai, with whom he was paired for the first and last time.
The film tells the story of two friends, Bhanu and Mangal, who risk their lives to save villagers from a cruel king. The narrative also includes a romantic subplot, with Bina Rai portraying the village beauty who loves Bahadur (Dev Anand), while another Bahadur (Dilip Kumar) also falls in love with her. Dev Anand plays Bhanu, a commander in King Zhingoora's army, who is involved in looting and pillaging. The film's songs were written by Rajendra Krishan, with music composed by C. Ramchandra.
Insaniyat is a remake of the 1950 Telugu film Palletoori Pilla and remains the only film to feature both Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand together onscreen. Despite being reasonably well-scripted and featuring memorable songs, the film did not achieve significant success with audiences.

इंसानियत (1955) के निर्माता और निर्देशक एस.एस. वासन थे और यह रोमांचक एक्शन से भरी कॉस्ट्यूम ड्रामा फ़िल्म थी। यह भारतीय सिनेमा इतिहास की अकेली ऐसी फ़िल्म है जिसमें हिन्दी सिनेमा के दो सबसे बड़े सितारों, दिलीप कुमार और देव आनंद ने साथ अभिनय किया है। अपने करियर के शिखर पर यह दोनों ही अभिनेता बेहद लोकप्रिय थे, पर दोनों की सितारा हैसियत से एक किस्म की प्रतिद्वंद्विता भी जन्म लेती थी। क्योंकि उनके चाहनेवाले और आलोचक अक्सर उनकी लोकप्रियता की आपस में तुलना किया करते थे। हालाँकि दिलीप कुमार ने एक बार एक पत्रकार से बातचीत में साफ़ कहा था कि हम कोई “दुश्मन नहीं” एक-दूसरे के। इन दोनों के साथ राज कपूर का नाम भी जोड़ लें तो साथ मिलकर यह त्रयी भारतीय सिनेमा में पचास के सुनहरे दशक की सबसे प्रसिद्ध नायकीय तिकड़ी बनाती है। हालाँकि वे ऑनस्क्रीन एक-दूसरे के प्रतिद्वंद्वी माने जायेंगे, लेकिन वे ऑफ़स्क्रीन वे सदा दोस्त बने रहे। जब भी मौका आया, तीनों ने एक-दूसरे को फ़िल्मों और अभिनय को लेकर ईमानदार सलाह दी।
इंसानियत फ़िल्म की कहानी का श्रेय 'जैमिनी स्टूडियो' के कहानी विभाग को दिया गया है, और इसके संवाद रामानंद सागर ने लिखे थे। हालाँकि दोहरी स्टार पावर होने के बावजूद फ़िल्म उम्मीद के मुताबिक “सितारों की मुतभेड़” नहीं बन पाई। मंगल की भूमिका में दिलीप कुमार का किरदार कहीं ज़्यादा दमदार था और फ़िल्म उन्हीं के नाम रही। वहीं भानु की भूमिका में देव आनंद के लिए यह उनके करियर का पहला और आखिरी मौका रहा जब वे ग्रामीण परिवेश में स्थित किसी रोमांचक कॉस्ट्यूम ड्रामा में नज़र आये। मज़ेदार बात है कि फ़िल्म की कहानी के हिसाब से देखें तो देव आनंद का किरदार भानु ही फ़िल्म का मुख्य नायक ठहरेगा, क्योंकि उसी किरदार के साथ नायिका की जोड़ी थी। फ़िल्म में नायिका का किरदार अभिनेत्री बीना राय ने निभाया था, जिनकी देव आनंद के साथ पहली और आखिरी बार जोड़ी इसी फ़िल्म में बनी।
फ़िल्म की कहानी दो ऐसे दोस्तों भानु और मंगल के बारे में है, जो एक क्रूर राजा से गाँववालों की रक्षा के लिए अपनी जान जोखिम में डालते हैं। रोमांच से भरी इस कहानी में एक रोमांटिक उपकथा ग्रामीण कन्या दुर्गा (बीना राय) का किरदार जोड़ता है। दुर्गा गाँव के एक जाँबाज़ (देव आनंद) से प्यार करती है, जबकि गाँव का दूसरा जाँबाज़ (दिलीप कुमार) भी उसे अपना दिल दे बैठता है। इंसानियत फ़िल्म के गाने राजेंद्र कृष्ण ने लिखे थे और फ़िल्म का संगीत सी. रामचंद्र ने दिया था। इंसानियत 1950 में निर्मित एन.टी. रामाराव के अभिनय से सजी तेलुगु फिल्म पल्लेटूरी पिल्ला की हिन्दी रीमेक है। उल्लेखनीय बात थी कि दिलीप कुमार और देव आनंद दोनों पर्दे पर एक साथ इसी फ़िल्म में दिखे। लेकिन कसी हुई पटकथा और कई अच्छे गानों के बावजूद इस फ़िल्म को दर्शकों के बीच उम्मीद के मुताबिक कामयाबी नहीं मिली।
