The film is based on an old Malayalam folk song. It tells the story of Poomatha, a beautiful tribal orphan girl. The rich landlord, whose tenant she is, tries to rape her. She, however manages to escape. Enraged, the landowner drives her out of the village. In the forest she meets Cheman, a nomadic shepherd. they fall in love and have a relationship; but after a while he moves on with his group leaving Poomatha alone - a prey to the landowner's malice.
