Introduction

Hunterwali Ki Beti (1943) was the first Indian film to have a sequel to the 1935 film Hunterwali. Both movies starred Fearless Nadia in the lead role and were produced by the Wadia brothers, JBH and Homi Wadia (Nadia's husband), under the banner of Wadia Movietone. Nadia, born Mary Ann Evans on January 8, 1908, is best known by her stage name, Fearless Nadia. An Australian-Indian actress and stuntwoman, she made a significant impact in Indian cinema, particularly for her role as the masked, cloaked adventurer in Hunterwali, one of the earliest female-led Indian films.

Nadia married Homi Wadia in 1961, and became known as Nadia Wadia. She also performed in Indian theater and worked with the Zarko Circus starting in 1930. Nadia was introduced to Hindi films by Jamshed "J.B.H." Wadia, the founder of Wadia Movietone, known for pioneering stunts and action sequences in 1930s Bombay cinema. Initially, J.B.H. was skeptical about Nadia's interest in films, but he took a chance by casting her in a cameo as a slave girl in the film Desh Deepak (1934). The sequence, which featured her striking blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes, was hand-painted in color. She went on to play Princess Parizaad in Noor-e-Yaman. Nadia quickly became a sensation with audiences, and J.B.H., joined by his younger brother Homi, decided to mold her into a star, recognizing her circus skills and talent for performing stunts.

Nadia's career spanned various genres, including her appearance in a James Bond spoof, Khiladi (1968). In 1993, her grandnephew, Riyad Vinci Wadia, made a documentary about her life and films titled Fearless: The Hunterwali Story. The documentary premiered at the 1993 Berlin International Film Festival, and later, German writer and film curator Dorothee Wenner published Fearless Nadia: The True Story of Bollywood's Original Stunt Queen. The book was translated into English in 2005.

In Rangoon (2017), directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the character portrayed by Kangana Ranaut was inspired by Nadia's iconic role in Hunterwali. Nadia passed away on January 9, 1996, but her legacy lives on. In 2015, the Government of India issued a postage stamp in her honor to commemorate her 100th birthday. Today, any Indian actress performing stunts in a film is affectionately referred to as Fearless Nadia, a tribute to her groundbreaking contributions to Indian cinema.
