Introduction

B.S. Thapa's Himalay Se Ooncha is loosely inspired by the experiences of mountain climbing recounted in H.P.S. Ahluwalia's memoir Higher Than Everest, which details his ascent of Mt. Everest despite harsh challenges. Ahluwalia himself served as a consultant during filming as Thapa wanted to do justice to the portrayal of the grim reality of being stuck in snow capped mountains. The plot centres on two children trapped in life-threatening mountains after their airplane crashes and they remain the only survivors. While the storyline diverges significantly from the memoir, it still evokes the immense hardships faced by the ambitious mountaineers, who are heralded as our national heroes in the books of history, during their 1965 expedition to Everest.

In addition to addressing the grave dangers of the treacherous mountain ranges, the film highlights the enchanting scenic beauty of the Himalayas, complemented by music and dance. “Rahi O Rahi” seeks to inspire the audience to cross the metaphorical Himalayas of one's own burdens., while “O Sathi Re” celebrates the feeling of love against the ethereal backdrop of the Himalayas.

बी.एस. थापा की फ़िल्म हिमालय से ऊँचा की कहानी काफ़ी हद तक पर्वतारोही एच.पी.एस. अहलूवालिया के माउंट एवरेस्ट की दुर्गम चढ़ाई पर लिखे संस्मरणों की किताब 'हायर दैन एवरेस्ट' पर आधारित है। फ़िल्म की शूटिंग के दौरान खुद अहलूवालिया सलाहकार के रूप में मौजूद रहे थे क्योंकि निर्देशक थापा चाहते थे कि इस सफ़र की दुर्गमता और बर्फ से ढके हिमालय में फंस जाने का कठिन अनुभव सिनेमा के पर्दे पर अपनी पूरी सच्चाई के साथ दिखाया जा सके। फ़िल्म की कहानी हिमालय की ऊँची चोटियों के बीच एक हवाई जहाज़ के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने के बाद ज़िन्दा बचे दो बच्चों के बारे में है जो इन दुर्गम पहाड़ों के बीच अकेले फंस जाते हैं। हालाँकि फ़िल्म की कहानी अहलूवालिया के संस्मरणों से काफी अलग है, पर यह महत्वाकांक्षी पर्वतारोहियों के रास्ते में आनेवाली दुरुह कठिनाइयों को कुशलता से दिखाती है। उस 1965 के एवरेस्ट अभियान के पर्वतारोहियों को तो हमारी इतिहास की किताबों में राष्ट्रीय नायकों की तरह याद किया जाता है।

ऊँची पर्वत शृंखलाओं पर पर्वतारोहण से जुड़ी गंभीर चुनौतियों और खतरों को दिखाने के साथ ही हिमालय से ऊँचा मोहक गीतों और नृत्य के साथ हिमालय पर्वत की मनमोहक प्राकृतिक सुंदरता को भी पर्दे पर बखूबी पेश करती है। “राही ओ राही” जैसा गीत देखनेवाले को अपने-अपने मन के भीतर मौजूद हिमालयों को पार करने के लिए प्रेरित करता है जबकि “ओ साथी रे” प्यार की भावना को हिमालय की नयनाभिराम पृष्ठभूमि के आगे रखकर उसका जश्न मनाता है।
