Gie2005
Introduction
Body of Work
Gie is an interpretation - based on the journal of Soe Hok Gie, an activist who lived in the 60s - of the tumultuous years of modern Indonesian history. Gie is a history student, principled, sensitive and intensely concerned about his collapsing nation. He also loves to explore the mountains, to admire the beauty of nature. His life is a clash between the high drama of political events and the small world of friendships and romance. But he seems to fall apart on seeing that his constant battle for justice and truth brings forth another dictatorial regime, and causes the massacre of thousands of suspected communists, including his childhood friend. Disenchanted, he continues to fight, but his uncompromising idealism drives people away. His best friends leave him, the woman he loves rejects him. From time to time, nature is where he finds peace. It is his solace, his joy, his ultimate harmony….
