Soni Razdan

Soni Mahesh Bhatt (born 25 October 1956) Professionally known as Soni Razdan, she is a British-born actress and film director whose body of work has significantly shaped Indian Hindi-language cinema. Emerging as a prominent performer during the 1980s and early 1990s, Razdan became known for her nuanced portrayals in parallel and mainstream films alike. She is a member of the influential Bhatt family of Indian cinema and is married to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. She is the mother of writer Shaheen Bhatt and actor Alia Bhatt, and the stepmother of Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt.

Raised in Bombay (now Mumbai), Razdan comes from a culturally diverse background. Her father was of Kashmiri Pandit heritage, while her mother, Gertrude Hoelzer, was of German descent. This multicultural upbringing informed her artistic sensibility and linguistic versatility. Razdan made her Hindi film debut in a supporting role in Aparna Sen's 1981 film 36 Chowringhee Lane, starring Jennifer Kendal. The film, won the top prize at the inaugural Manila International Film Festival. Razdan's performance drew critical notice, and the film has since been widely interpreted as a poignant commentary on female loneliness within a patriarchal social structure.

She appeared in Ahista Ahista (1981), directed by Esmayeel Shroff, a remake of the Kannada classic Gejje Pooje. In 1983, she featured in Shyam Benegal's satirical drama Mandi, based on Ghulam Abbas's Urdu short story Aanandi, which examined the intersections of politics and prostitution. Razdan's career-defining breakthrough came with Saaransh (1984), directed by Mahesh Bhatt, in which she portrayed a grieving mother coping with the loss of her only son. The film was India's official entry to the Academy Awards and earned her nominations from the Bengal Film Journalists' Association and Filmfare.

In the mid-1980s, Razdan consolidated her standing with critically and commercially successful films such as Trikal and Khamosh. She also appeared in the English-language film On Wings of Fire (1986). During the early 1990s, she was seen in Daddy, Sadak, Saathi, Sir, Gumrah, and Gunaah. In 1998, she played the lead in the Canadian production Such a Long Journey, adapted from Rohinton Mistry's novel and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In recent years, Razdan has successfully transitioned to digital platforms, appearing in acclaimed series such as The Verdict: State vs Nanavati, Out of Love, This Way Up, and Call My Agent: Bollywood, reaffirming her enduring relevance and artistic range.
