Pooja Bhatt

Pooja Bhatt (born 24 February 1972) is an Indian actress, director, and filmmaker who has worked predominantly in Hindi cinema. Widely regarded as one of the most articulate, candid, and outspoken leading women of the 1990s, Bhatt carved a distinct identity in an era dominated by conventional heroines. Over the course of her career, she has received several prestigious honours, including two National Film Awards and a Filmfare Award.

Born into the influential Bhatt family, she is the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and Kiran Bhatt (née Loraine Bright). She made her acting debut in a leading role with Mahesh Bhatt's television film Daddy (1989), a performance that earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and immediately established her as a performer of substance. On her father's side, Bhatt is of Gujarati heritage, while her mother is of English, Scottish, Armenian, and Burmese descent. She is the stepdaughter of actor Soni Razdan and the sister of Rahul Bhatt, with younger half-sisters Shaheen Bhatt and Alia Bhatt. Her extended family includes filmmakers and actors such as Mohit Suri, Smiley Suri, and Emraan Hashmi. Bhatt married restaurateur Manish Makhija in 2003; the marriage ended in divorce in 2014.

Her commercial breakthrough came with the romantic comedy Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), which became her highest-grossing film. Throughout the 1990s, she earned critical acclaim for her performances in notable films such as Sadak (1991), Junoon (1992), Naaraaz (1994), Angrakshak (1995), Chaahat (1996), Tamanna (1997), Border (1997), Kabhi Na Kabhi (1998), Angaaray (1998), and Zakhm (1998). Her roles often explored emotional depth and social complexity, setting her apart from her contemporaries.

In 1997, Bhatt launched her first production venture, Tamanna, in which she portrayed an abandoned girl, which won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues. She achieved acclaim with Zakhm (1998), opposite Ajay Devgn, which received the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration and was inspired by the life of Mahesh Bhatt's mother. In 2001, she appeared in the English-language drama Everybody Says I'm Fine!, directed by Rahul Bose.

Often celebrated for her bold fashion choices and forthright views, she has been recognised as one of the most stylish and fearless actresses. Beyond cinema, she has been active in social and political causes, including animal rights advocacy and participation in Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022.
