Drohkaal (1994)An action thriller directed and produced by Govind Nihalani that examines India's struggle against terrorism through a psychologically nuanced narrative. Rather than presenting terrorism solely as a spectacle of violence, the film foregrounds the emotional, ethical, and psychological burden borne by honest police officers engaged in counterterrorism operations. The film was simultaneously remade in Tamil and Telugu in 1995 as Kuruthipunal and Drohi, respectively.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Om Puri as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abhay Singh and Naseeruddin Shah as DCP Abbas Lodhi. Mita Vashisht portrays Sumitra Singh, Ashish Vidyarthi appears as the terrorist leader Commander Bhadra, and Amrish Puri plays Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pathak. The supporting cast includes Annu Kapoor as Surinder, Ila Arun as Zeenat, Milind Gunaji as Shiv, Manoj Bajpayee as Anand, Shrivallabh Vyas as Inspector Tiwari, Vineet Kumar as Kishan, Kitu Gidwani as Jaswanti, Joan David as Mala, and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam as Mangal Dev.
The narrative follows experienced anti-terrorism officers Abhay Singh (Om Puri) and Abbas Lodhi (Naseeruddin Shah) as they undertake a covert operation to dismantle a ruthless terrorist organization responsible for spreading fear across Indian cities. Two undercover officers, Shiv (Milind Gunaji) and Anand (Manoj Bajpayee), are infiltrated into the organization under assumed identities. While Anand sacrifices his life to protect the secrecy of the mission after his cover is compromised, Shiv gradually earns the complete confidence of the organization's leader, Commander Bhadra (Ashish Vidyarthi).
Although Bhadra is eventually apprehended, he refuses to divulge any information during interrogation. Meanwhile, a series of terrorist attacks, the assassination of a government minister, and the suspicious deaths of key witnesses reveal the existence of an extensive network of terrorist sympathizers embedded within the state apparatus. Inspector Tiwari (Shrivallabh Vyas), who is secretly aligned with the terrorists, eliminates a captured militant to prevent the disclosure of sensitive information. The apparent suicide of IGP Pathak (Amrish Puri) further exposes the depth of institutional infiltration. Abhay himself becomes the target of psychological coercion when Bhadra threatens his family, compelling him to facilitate the terrorist leader's escape from police custody. Under constant surveillance by Surinder (Annu Kapoor) and Mala (Joan David), who pose as guests in his home while holding his family hostage, Abhay is forced into reluctant collaboration. The conspiracy reaches a tragic climax when Abbas Lodhi is captured and accidentally killed by Bhadra during an interrogation, depriving the police of one of its most capable officers.
The moral centre of the narrative is reinforced by Sumitra Singh, whose courage and unwavering commitment to her husband's duty inspire Abhay to fulfil his professional and ethical obligations despite overwhelming personal loss. When Surinder attempts to assault Lodhi's daughter, Sumitra intervenes decisively and ultimately kills him in self-defence, thereby protecting her family and restoring Abhay's resolve. Abhay subsequently confronts Commander Bhadra in a final struggle and kills him. Recognizing the strategic importance of preserving the undercover operation, Abhay instructs Shiv to shoot him so that Shiv's loyalty to the terrorist organization remains unquestioned. Abhay's self-sacrifice enables Shiv to assume leadership of the organization, thereby ensuring the continuation of the covert mission from within the terrorist network.
Drohkaal received widespread critical acclaim for its realistic depiction of terrorism, institutional corruption, and the moral dilemmas confronting law enforcement personnel. Ashish Vidyarthi won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. Mita Vashisht received the Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996, while Govind Nihalani was honoured with the Best Director Award at the Damascus International Film Festival in 1995.
Despite its critical success and numerous accolades, Drohkaal performed poorly at the box office. Produced on a modest budget, its sombre realism, psychological complexity, and uncompromising portrayal of terrorism contrasted sharply with the formulaic conventions of mainstream commercial cinema of the period. but it has since come to be regarded as one of the most significant and influential works in Indian political and realist cinema.
