Body of Work

Downtown Girls depicts the lives, loves and friendships of two young women who work at a hairdresser's and a clothes shop respectively. Blending social drama with comedy and romance, it shows a socially marginalised set of characters that spend plenty of time commuting on the Cairo Metro. They are emancipated, free- thinking, independent metropolitan women, wise enough to neither let themselves be victimised by a male-dominated class-based society, nor to expect too much change in their socio- economic situation. They fantasise about, respond to, start relationships with and accept invitations to the houses of strangers on the train. But they never lose their innocence or honour even when they are oppressed by capitalism and patriarchy.
