Introduction

Do Boond Pani (1971) Directed and produced by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, the film was a heart-rending social drama crafted by the visionary filmmaker Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, under the banner of Naya Sansar. Abbas not only directed and produced the film but also penned the story, screenplay, and dialogues, with additional contributions by noted writer Inder Raj Anand.

The film marked the acting debut of Kiran Kumar and featured a talented ensemble cast including Simi Garewal, Jalal Agha, and Madhu Chanda. Set against the arid backdrop of Rajasthan, the narrative explor es the harsh realities of water scarcity and the transformative power of human sacrifice and collective effort.

At the heart of the story is Ganga Singh (played by Jalal Agha), a young man who joins the workforce building a dam that promises to bring life to the barren desert. His untimely death leaves behind a grieving widow and a young son, but his legacy lives on—the dam is eventually completed and named "Ganga Sagar" in his honour. His sacrifice becomes a symbol of hope, turning a desolate land into fertile ground.

The film's music, composed by the legendary Jaidev, was lauded for its emotional depth and grandeur. The lyrics were penned by an exceptional trio: Kaifi Azmi, Balkavi Bairagi, and M. R. Mukul. The soundtrack includes several notable songs that resonated deeply with audiences: Bani Teri Bindiya – sung by Lakshmi Shankar, captures the joy of the newlywed Gauri as she enters her new village home; Ja Ri Pawaniya Piya Ke Des Ja – rendered soulfully by Asha Bhosle with lyrics by Kaifi Azmi, reflects a wife's longing as she remembers her late husband (filmed on Simi Garewal); Pital Ki Mori Gagri (Parts 1 & 2) – sung by Parveen Sultana and Minoo Purshottam, a moving song that depicts village women trekking long distances to fetch water; Do Boond Pani – the haunting title track, performed by Mukesh and Noor Jehan, echoes the film's central theme; Mar Gai Mar Gai Re – sung by Meenu Purushottam, Ambar Kumar, and Bhushan Mehta, and Sainani – performed by Ambar Kumar and Shrikant Moghe. Among these, Pital Ki Mori Gagri and Ja Ri Pawaniya became particularly iconic and continue to be remembered as classics of Hindi film music.

Celebrated as an “inspirational melodrama,” the film was critically acclaimed and received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. Despite its critical success and powerful message, Do Boond Pani did not fare well commercially and failed at the box office.
