Introduction

Deepak (1940) Directed by Dwarka Khosla, it was a dramatic film that centred around the moral and professional struggles of a young idealistic doctor. The film stars Prithviraj Kapoor in the title role of Dr. Deepak, alongside Ashalata Wabgaonkar and Vatsala in key roles. Supporting cast members include Jeevan, Anant Marathe, S. Nazir, Vatsala Kumtekar, Nazir Kashmiri, and Baby Suman. The film premiered in Bombay (now Mumbai) on December 7, 1940.

The plot follows Dr. Deepak, a forward-thinking medical practitioner whose unconventional use of faith-based healing methods leads to his expulsion from the medical community. His career takes a dramatic turn when he successfully treats a gravely ill prince, earning him the prestigious post of Chief Medical Officer. However, his rise is short-lived, as a jealous court physician frames him for murder. While imprisoned, he learns that his beloved has fallen critically ill. In a tense and emotional climax, Dr. Deepak must find a way to heal her from behind bars, leading to a redemptive and satisfying conclusion.

While the film's storyline explored themes of ethics, jealousy, and redemption, concrete information about its box office performance remains scarce. Though it is listed on many websites as having been released in December 1940, Deepak is absent from most compilations of that year's top-grossing Indian films. As a result, it is difficult to ascertain whether it was a commercial success or a lesser-known release.

The film's music was composed by Timir Baran, a noted figure in Indian classical and film music. However, there is limited documentation on the film's soundtrack or its popularity at the time. As such, both its commercial and musical impact remain largely undocumented, making Deepak something of a cinematic enigma from early Indian film history.
