Introduction

दहेज (1950) एक गंभीर सामाजिक समस्या को उठाने वाली मार्मिक फ़िल्म है, जिसके निर्देशक प्रसिद्ध फ़िल्मकार व्ही. शांताराम थे। इस फ़िल्म का निर्माण उस दौर के नामी स्टूडियो 'राजकमल कलामंदिर' के बैनर तले हुआ था। फ़िल्म में सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी ज़िम्मेदारी वी. अवधूत ने संभाली थी और इसकी बहुत तारीफ़ हुई। दहेज फ़िल्म पृथ्वीराज कपूर, करण दीवान, जयश्री, उल्हास, मुमताज़ बेग़म, केशवराव दाते और ललिता पवार जैसे सशक्त कलाकारों के अभिनय से सजी है। यह फ़िल्म भारतीय समाज में गहराई तक पैठी दहेज की कुप्रथा के विनाशक प्रभावों का मार्मिक चित्रण करती है।

दहेज की मार्मिक कथा ने दर्शकों के दिलों को छू लिया। ख़ासकर महात्मा गांधी के विचारों से प्रेरित लोग इस फ़िल्म से बहुत प्रभावित हुए। खुद महात्मा गांधी ने दहेज प्रथा की तीखी आलोचना करते हुए इसे जाति प्रथा से निकली एक अमानवीय व्यवस्था कहा था। उनका मानना था कि दहेज प्रथा स्त्री का वस्तुकरण करती है और समाज के कल्याण के लिए इसका पूर्ण उन्मूलन ज़रूरी है।
रिलीज़ के बाद दहेज न सिर्फ़ व्यावसायिक रूप से सफल रही, इसने समीक्षकों से भी खूब तारीफ़ें बटोरीं। फ़िल्म की सामाजिक चेतना और भावनात्मक गहराई की खूब प्रशंसा हुई। अभिेनेता पृथ्वीराज कपूर का फ़िल्म में अभिनय विशेष रूप से उल्लेखनीय रहा।
फ़िल्म का आत्मा की गहराइयों तक जानेवाला कर्णप्रिय संगीत संगीतकार वसंत देसाई ने रचा था और इसके लिए गीत शम्स लखनवी ने लिखे थे। शम्स लखनवी ने गानों के साथ इस फ़िल्म की कहानी और संवाद भी लिखे थे। उनकी सशक्त कलम ने फ़िल्म को परिवेशगत प्रामाणिकता प्रदान की और गीतों में बसी काव्यात्मकता से फ़िल्म को अद्भुत ऊँचाइयों तक पहुँचाया।
