CINE.maq | Costumes, Maquettes & Props — featured artwork

Introduction

CINE.maq is the archival document type that houses costumes, maquettes and props. Costumes are often the first layer of characterisation, communicating social status, period, personality, and mood before a single line of dialogue is delivered in the film. Props, whether ordinary or extraordinary, extend this visual storytelling by grounding fictional worlds in tangible detail. Even the most mundane object, when carefully chosen or crafted, can signal emotional depth or narrative significance. They occupy a commanding presence in the frame, shaping how audiences connect with the world of cinema. Then comes another form of ephemera, absent from the screen yet of great consequence in production: the maquette. These miniature 3-D preliminary sketches allow costume designers and directors to visualise how full-scale costumes will look and interact within the spatial environment. They provide a convenient reference for proportions, textures, and silhouette, facilitating early-stage design decisions and adjustments before full production begins.
