Broken Silence1995
Introduction
Body of Work
Broken Silence is constructed as a flashback. A shy Carthusian monk, Fried Adelphi, dedicated to silence and meditation, tells the story of his journey to a priest. His order in Switzerland had sent him to Indonesia. En route, he experiences claustrophobia and de- planes in New Delhi. Without contacts or any worldly knowledge, he is, quite by chance, reunited with his fellow passenger, Ashaela, the young, impudent, funny Afro-American who has stolen the wallet he dropped at the airport. However, her guilty conscience and her curiosity about this unworldly man push her to help him. She leads him on adventurous journey in India by rickshaw, bus and boat, and finally, by ship to Indonesia where he succeeds in fulfilling his task. The story then takes an unexpected turn. This quiet odyssey - emotionally rich, humorous and tender and bathed in grace – is as much an inner journey as a discovery of a world unknown to the two travelers.
