Introduction

Bombai Ka Babu (1960), despite its intriguing premise and star-studded cast, failed to resonate with audiences upon release, receiving a lukewarm response. The film, directed by Raj Khosla and written by Rajinder Singh Bedi, tells the story of Babu (Dev Anand), a petty criminal who accidentally kills his friend Bali and, under the pressure of another lawbreaker, is forced to impersonate as the son of a wealthy man, Shahji (Nazir Hussain). In this new guise, Babu is perceived as the brother of Shahji's daughter, Maya (Suchitra Sen), and must uphold a moral facade, never crossing the line of decency.
Despite its unconventional narrative, which could have been a compelling exploration of morality, deception and identity, Bombai Ka Babu didn't initially find favour with audiences. Perhaps the film's exploration of the relationship between Babu and Maya, which bordered on romantic tension between siblings, was too avant-garde for the time, leading to the film's tepid reception.
However, the film is far from lacking in merit. Suchitra Sen's ethereal beauty and poise added a layer of sophistication, while the music, composed by S. D. Burman, played a crucial role in enhancing the film's emotional depth. The melodious songs, sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi, remain memorable. The pairing of Dev Anand and Suchitra Sen, known for their charm and chemistry, seemed like a sure bet for success.
In retrospect, Bombai Ka Babu is often considered one of Raj Khosla's finest directorial efforts, with its richly layered story, a strong moral underpinning, and an emotionally charged atmosphere. Its failure at the box-office might have been due to an audience that wasn't yet ready to embrace the film's deeper themes, especially the complex dynamics between Babu and Maya. Despite its initial reception, the film remains an interesting cinematic experience with its blend of melodrama, romance, and suspense.

बम्बई का बाबू (1960) अपनी दिलचस्प कहानी और सितारों से सजी अभिनेताओं की सूची के बावजूद रिलीज़ के समय दर्शकों को आकर्षित करने में विफल रही। इस फ़िल्म की पटकथा उर्दू और हिन्दी के नामचीन अफ़सानानिगार राजिन्दर सिंह बेदी ने लिखी थी और इसके निर्देशक राज खोसला थे। फ़िल्म की कहानी एक नौजवान बाबू (देव आनंद) के इर्द-गिर्द आगे बढ़ती है। बाबू एक छोटा-मोटा अपराधी है, जिससे भूलवश अपने ही दोस्त बाली का खून हो जाता है। एक दूसरे अपराधी के दबाव में आकर बाबू शाहजी (नज़ीर हुसैन) नाम के एक रईस इंसान के बेटे के रूप में खुद को पेश करने के लिए मजबूर हो जाता है। इस नए भेस में बाबू अब शाहजी की बेटी माया (सुचित्रा सेन) का भाई है और भले ही यह झूठा रिश्ता हो, इसे निभाने के लिए उसे किसी भी हालत में नैतिकता और शालीनता का दामन छोड़ना नहीं है।
प्यार, नैतिकता और धोखे से बुनी अपनी लीक से हटकर कहानी के बावजूद बम्बई का बाबू को दर्शकों का साथ नहीं मिला। शायद फिल्म में बाबू और माया के बीच के रिश्ता, जो कथित रूप से भाई-बहन के बीच रोमांस का आभास देता था, उस वक्त के लिए कुछ ज़्यादा ही क्रांतिकारी विचार था। दर्शकों द्वारा फ़िल्म को नकारे जाने की एक यह भी वजह हो सकती है।
इसके बावजूद फ़िल्म में कई उल्लेखनीय खूबियाँ गिनाई जा सकती हैं। सुचित्रा सेन की सौम्य खूबसूरत छवि फ़िल्म को एक सुलझा हुआ ठहराव देती है जबकि एस. डी. बर्मन का संगीत फ़िल्म को भावनात्मक गहराई देता है। आशा भोंसले और मोहम्मद रफ़ी के गाए मधुर गीत आज भी यादगार बने हुए हैं। इसके ऊपर देव आनंद और सुचित्रा सेन की अपने आकर्षण और तालमेल के लिए जानी जाने वाली ताज़गी भरी जोड़ी के चलते फ़िल्म की सफलता निश्चित मान ली गई थी।
आज भी पीछे मुड़कर देखने पर बम्बई का बाबू को निर्देशक राज खोसला के निर्देशन में बनी सबसे बेहतरीन फ़िल्मों में से एक माना जाता है। एक मजबूत नैतिक आधार पर खड़ी इसकी दमदार कहानी और उसके भावनात्मक उतार-चढ़ाव भूले नहीं जा सकते। टिकट खिड़की पर इसकी असफलता की वजह संभवत: बाबू और माया के किरदारों के बीच के उलझे रिश्ते को अपनाने में दर्शकों की हिचक थी। पर इस व्यावसायिक नाकामयाबी के बावजूद यह फ़िल्म अपने मेलोड्रामा, रोमांस और रोमांचक कथानक के चलते एक दिलचस्प सिनेमाई अनुभव है।
