Body of Work

Set against the backdrop of India's freedom struggle, Gajendra Ahire's Bayo is a moving story of young Bayo's eternal wait for her estranged lover, and of fate which gives her life a tragic twist. It shows both the communal harmony that existed in the country before Independence, and the sacrifices made by individuals at the personal and emotional level. Bayo, a Muslim orphan girl, is raised by an orthodox Brahmin. She falls in love with the Brahmin's adoptive son, Vishwanath, and waits for him to return from abroad. The wait becomes endless. Her story, and the story of an Indian woman writer living in London who accidentally discovers a packet of unopened letters written by Bayo to Vishwanath, intertwine and lead to an unexpected finale.
