Bawre Nain1950
Introduction
Bawre Nain (1950) a romantic drama directed by Kidar Nath Sharma, was produced under the Ambitious Pictures banner and filmed at Shree Sound Studios. The film starred Raj Kapoor, Geeta Bali, Vijayalaxmi, Prakash, Darpan, Pessi Patel, Jaswant, and Cuckoo. Both Raj Kapoor and Geeta Bali were discoveries of Sharma: Kapoor made his debut in Sharma's Neel Kamal (1947), while Geeta Bali's first role was in Sohaag Raat.
Though the storyline was considered weak, the film was elevated by its memorable music, composed by Roshan. The plot follows Chand (Kapoor) and Tara (Bali), who fall in love. However, when Chand leaves town in search of work and fails to return, Tara sets out to find him—only to discover that he has married another woman, Rajni (Vijailaxmi).
Despite initial doubts about Roshan's ability—especially after his earlier failure in Neki Aur Badi—Sharma stood by him as music director. This decision paid off. The soundtrack became a massive success, with songs like Khayalon Mein Kisi Ke capturing the hearts of millions and marking the beginning of Roshan's illustrious career. Notably, Teri Duniya Mein Dil Lagta Nahin, composed in Raga Darbari Kanada, became a breakthrough hit for playback singer Mukesh, helping establish him as the voice of Raj Kapoor.
Mukesh's distinctive tonal variations and soothing voice were effectively showcased in the song Teri Duniya Mein Dil Lagta Nahin. The composition beautifully conveyed the emotional depth of the song, and it is often credited with contributing significantly to Mukesh's artistic growth. This track also marked his rising prominence as the playback voice for Raj Kapoor, notably in films such as Awara and Shree 420.
Shamshad Begum's vocal versatility, as noted by musicologist Ashok Ranade, was rivaled only by Asha Bhosle in later years. In the song Ichak Bichak Bhurr, she demonstrated her vocal agility with a striking high-pitched trill on the word bhurr, followed by a rapid sequence of two trills an octave apart—an impressive display of control and range. Rajkumari's performance in Sun Bairi Balam Sach Bol Re was another standout, her singing perfectly mirroring the spirited on-screen energy of Geeta Bali. The duet Mohabbat Ke Maaron Ka Haal, sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle, also gained popularity, adding to the film's musical success.
Bawre Nain was a commercial success and has since been regarded as a classic, particularly praised for Sharma's poetic lyrics. Sharma also shaped Raj Kapoor's early career by creating romantic, stylized characters for him, starting with Neel Kamal and continuing with Bawre Nain. Geeta Bali's journey to stardom began when Sharma discovered her as a teenager living in humble circumstances. He cast her first in Sohaag Raat and then in Bawre Nain, where she portrayed a woman on a heartfelt quest for her lost love. The character of Rajni, played by Vijayalaxmi, represented the "modern" educated woman, a common archetype used to portray the vamp in Hindi cinema of that era.
हालाँकि फ़िल्म की कहानी को उतना दमदार नहीं माना गया था, लेकिन इसके संगीत में ऐसा जादू था कि उसने फ़िल्म को एक अलग ही ऊँचाई दे दी। संगीतकार रोशन द्वारा तैयार फ़िल्म के गीत अत्यधिक लोकप्रिय हुए। फ़िल्म की कहानी नौजवान चाँद (राज कपूर) और तारा (गीता बाली) के प्रेम के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। पर जब चाँद काम की तलाश में शहर छोड़कर जाता है और बहुत समय होने पर भी वापस नहीं लौटता, तो तारा बेचैन होकर उसकी तलाश में निकल पड़ती है। लेकिन जब चाँद उसे मिलता है, तारा को यह जानकर सदमा लगता है कि उसने तो किसी और से शादी कर ली है। चाँद के जीवन में अब रजनी (विजयलक्ष्मी) आ चुकी है।
हालाँकि किदार शर्मा की पिछली फ़िल्म नेकी और बदी (1949), जिससे संगीतकार रोशन ने अपना करियर शुरु किया, एक बड़ी असफलता साबित हुई थी, फिर भी शर्मा ने उनकी काबिलियत पर अपना भरोसा बनाए रखा। और बावरे नैन के साथ शर्मा का यह फैसला सही साबित हुआ। इस फ़िल्म का संगीत बेहद लोकप्रिय हुआ। ख़ासकर फ़िल्म में मुकेश के गाये ख़यालों में किसी के और तेरी दुनिया में दिल लगता नहीं जैसे गीतों ने लाखों दिलों के तारों को छू लिया और रोशन के शानदार फ़िल्मी करियर का धमाकेदार आरंभ हुआ। कर्नाटक शास्त्रीय संगीत के राग दरबारी में रचा गया तेरी दुनिया में दिल लगता नहीं वो गाना था जिसने पार्श्वगायक मुकेश की लोकप्रियता को आसमान पर पहुँचा दिया और उनके फ़िल्मी करियर का यह निर्णायक मोड़ साबित हुआ। कह सकते हैं कि इसी गीत के साथ उन्होंने राज कपूर की आवाज़ के रूप में अपनी एक नायाब पहचान स्थापित की। मुकेश की सुरीली आवाज़ और भावनाओं में डूबी अभिव्यक्ति इस गीत में बखूबी उभरकर सामने आई है। गायक मुकेश बाद के सालों में आईं आवारा (1951) और श्री 420 (1955) जैसी यादगार फ़िल्मों में राज कपूर की स्थायी आवाज़ बन गए।
संगीत विशेषज्ञ अशोक रानाडे के अनुसार शमशाद बेग़म जैसी गायन में विविधता उस दौर में आशा भोंसले के अलावा शायद ही किसी और गायिका के पास थी। उनके गीत इचक बिचक भुर्र में उन्होंने जैसे सुर को ऊँचा ले जाकर भुर्र शब्द पर गजब की तान खींची है और फिर अगले ही चरण में दो अलग सप्तकों में गाते हुए तानों की जो जुगलबन्दी पेश की, आवाज़ पर उनके जैसा नियंत्रण कम ही कलाकारों का होता है। वहीं दूसरी ओर सुन बैरी बलम सच बोल रे गीत में राजकुमारी की गायकी ने पर्दे पर इस गीत की नायिका गीता बाली के चंचल शोख़ अभिनय को बखूबी संभाला। मोहम्मद रफ़ी और आशा भोंसले का गाया युगल गीत मोहब्बत के मारों का हाल भी काफी लोकप्रिय हुआ था और इसने फ़िल्म के आकर्षण को और बढ़ाया।
बावरे नैन व्यावसायिक रूप से भी बहुत कामयाब रही और समय के साथ इसे अपने दौर की एक क्लासिक फ़िल्म का दर्जा मिल गया। निर्देशक किदार नाथ शर्मा की काव्यात्मक सिनेमाई अभिव्यक्ति इसमें उभरकर आती है। किदार शर्मा ने राज कपूर के करियर की शुरुआत में उनकी रोमांटिक और स्टाइलिश छवि गढ़ने में बहुत ख़ास भूमिका निभाई है। इसकी शुरुआत शर्मा की नील कमल (1947) से ही हो गई थी और बावरे नैन (1950) में इसे और गहराई मिली। नायिका गीता बाली को खोजने का श्रेय भी किदार शर्मा को ही जाता है। वे बहुत ही साधारण पृष्ठभूमि से आती हैं, जहाँ शर्मा ने उन्हें पहचाना और फ़िल्मों में मौका दिया। किशोरवय में ही उन्हें अपनी प्रतिभा दिखाने का मौका मिला। पहले उन्हें शर्मा ने सुहाग रात में मौका दिया और फिर बावरे नैन आई। बावरे नैन में गीता बाली ने एक ऐसी बदनसीब प्रेमिका की भूमिका निभाई थी जो अपने खोए हुए प्यार को ढूँढने निकलती है। वहीं दूसरी ओर फ़िल्म में अभिनेत्री विजयलक्ष्मी द्वारा निभाया गया रजनी नामक स्त्री का किरदार उस दौर की फ़िल्मों में अक्सर दिखने वाली उस 'आधुनिक शिक्षित महिला' के किरदार का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है जिसे आम तौर पर खलनायिका बनाकर प्रस्तुत किया जाता था।
