Barsaat marks the beginning of the dominant hold Raj Kapoor continued to have over critics and audiences' tastes alike. The film contrasts two approaches to romance embodied by Pran (Raj Kapoor) who is a compassionate poet, and his friend, the hedonistic womaniser, Gopal (Prem Nath). In the pair of Pran and Reshma (Nargis), Raj Kapoor embodies an ideal vision of love— a love that transcends class barriers, conservative parents and other tough battles of life. The couple was immortalised by renowned artist Dr. S.M. Pandit's poster art, which went on to inspire the iconic logo of R.K. Studio that was set up after the success of Barsaat.
