Introduction

Around the World (1967) A romantic comedy written and directed by Pachhi, the film starring Raj Kapoor as a young Indian man who sets off on a globe-trotting adventure with just five thousand rupees was unique for its unusual theme. Also featuring Rajshree, Ameeta, Om Prakash, and Mehmood, it holds the distinction of being India's first film released in the 70 mm format with stereophonic sound. It was shot across international locations including Niagara Falls and Disneyland, marking a significant moment in Indian cinematic history. West Indies Test cricketer Sir Frank Worrell made a special appearance, adding further international appeal.
The story follows Raj Singh, played by Raj Kapoor, the nephew and heir of wealthy industrialist J.J. Singh, portrayed by Raj Mehra. When J.J. Singh has to travel to Tokyo for business, he asks Raj to accompany him. However, a conniving employee named Pran deliberately creates obstacles in Raj's journey, hoping to embarrass him. Upon arrival in Tokyo, Raj discovers that his uncle has changed plans and is now in Europe. Stranded with only eight U.S. dollars in hand—insufficient even for a basic meal—Raj is forced to find a way to travel across continents with minimal resources. This leads him on a whirlwind journey filled with challenges, humorous situations, and unexpected encounters.
The film's soundtrack, composed by the legendary duo Shankar-Jaikishan, was rich in melody and popular with audiences. Songs such as Joshe Jawani Haay Re Haay by Mukesh, Dil Lagakar Aap Se also by Mukesh, Duniya Ki Sair Kar Lo sung by Mukesh and Sharda, and Chale Jana Zara Thehro in both duet and solo versions by Mukesh and Sharda added charm to the film. Other tracks included Jaane Bhi De Sanam by Sharda, Yeh Munh Aur Masoor Ki Dal by Mubarak Begum and Sharda, Kauwa Chala Hans Ki Chaal by Mohammed Rafi, and Aao Aao Aate Kyon Nahin sung by Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey.
Singer Sharda, who shared a close professional and personal relationship with Shankar of the celebrated musical duo Shankar-Jaikishan, was given the opportunity to sing all the songs for the female lead in the film. However, despite this prominent platform and considerable attention, she was unable to establish herself as a major playback singer in the industry.
Despite its international appeal and innovative elements, the film itself failed to perform well at the box office. It was one of several setbacks in Raj Kapoor's acting career during the late 1960s, eventually prompting him to shift his focus toward directing.

अराउंड द वर्ल्ड (1967) एक रोमांटिक कॉमेडी फ़िल्म थी जिसके लेखक और निर्देशक पच्ची थे। इसमें राज कपूर ने एक ऐसे भारतीय युवक का किरदार निभाया है जो जेब में सिर्फ़ पाँच हज़ार रुपये लेकर दुनिया की सैर पर निकल पड़ता है। अपने इस अनूठे विषय के चलते यह फ़िल्म अलग से रेखांकित की जाती है। फ़िल्म में राजश्री, अमीता, ओम प्रकाश और महमूद जैसे कलाकारों ने भूमिकाएँ निभाई हैं। यह भारत की पहली ऐसी फ़िल्म थी जिसे 70 एमएम फ़ॉर्मेट पर स्टीरियोफ़ोनिक साउंड के साथ रिलीज़ किया गया। इसमें कनाडा के मशहूर नियाग्रा फ़ॉल्स से लेकर अमेरिका के मशहूर डिज़्नीलैंड सहित कई अंतरराष्ट्रीय पर्यटक स्थलों को दिखाया गया था। इतनी सारी विदेशी जगहों पर शूटिंग के चलते भारतीय सिनेमा के इतिहास में यह एक महत्वपूर्ण क्षण माना जा सकता है। साथ ही वेस्ट इंडीज़ के नामी टेस्ट क्रिकेटर और कप्तान रहे सर फ्रैंक वॉरेल भी इसमें एक अतिथि भूमिका में नज़र आये जिसने इस फ़िल्म की अपील को और बढ़ा दिया।
फ़िल्म की कहानी राज सिंह (राज कपूर) के किरदार के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। राज धनी उद्योगपति जे. जे. सिंह (राज मेहरा) का भतीजा और उत्तराधिकारी है। होता कुछ यूँ है कि जे. जे. सिंह को व्यापार के सिलसिले में टोक्यो जाना है और वे राज से साथ चलने को कहते हैं। लेकिन प्राण नाम का एक धूर्त कर्मचारी जानबूझकर राज की यात्रा में अड़चनें पैदा करता है ताकि उसे किसी तरह शर्मिंदगी में डाल सके। टोक्यो पहुंचने पर राज को पता चलता है कि उसके चाचा का कार्यक्रम बदल चुका है और वे तो अब यूरोप में हैं। राज सिर्फ़ आठ डॉलर जेब में लिये परदेस में फंसा है। उसके पास पेट भर खाने के पैसे भी नहीं। उसके सामने चुनौती है कि वह इन्हीं बेहद सीमित संसाधनों में महाद्वीपों को पार करता अपने चाचा तक पहुँचे। इन्हीं परिस्थितियों में फंसा वह एक ऐसी रोमांचक यात्रा पर निकलता है जिसमें पग-पग पर उसके सामने चुनौतियाँ, हास्यपूर्ण स्थितियाँ और अप्रत्याशित किरदार प्रगट होते रहते हैं।
इस फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत मशहूर जोड़ी शंकर-जयकिशन ने तैयार किया था। मधुर धुनों से भरपूर इन गीतों को दर्शकों के बीच लोकप्रियता मिली। इनमें गायक मुकेश का गाया “जोश-ए-जवानी हाय रे हाय” और “दिल लगाकर आप से”, मुकेश और शारदा के गाए “दुनिया की सैर कर लो” और एकल और युगल दोनों रूप में “चले जाना ज़रा ठहरो”, शारदा की आवाज़ में “जाने भी दे सनम”, मुबारक बेगम और शारदा का गाया “ये मुँह और मसूर की दाल”, मोहम्मद रफ़ी का गाया “कौआ चला हंस की चाल” और मोहम्मद रफ़ी व मन्ना डे का गाया “आओ आओ आते क्यों नहीं” जैसे गीत प्रमुख थे।
गायिका शारदा का संगीतकार शंकर के साथ करीबी पेशेवर और व्यक्तिगत संबंध रहा। उन्हें इस फ़िल्म में शंकर-जयकिशन की जोड़ी ने नायिका के ऊपर फ़िल्माए गए सभी गीत गाने का अवसर दिया। हालाँकि इस बड़े मंच के मिलने और चर्चा में आने के बाद भी वह फ़िल्म उद्योग में एक बड़ी पार्श्वगायिका के रूप में खुद को स्थापित नहीं कर सकीं।
अंतरराष्ट्रीय आकर्षणों से भरे होने और कथानक में नवीनता के बावजूद यह फ़िल्म टिकट खिड़की पर कामयाब नहीं रही। साठ के दशक के उत्तरार्ध में राज कपूर के अभिनय करियर को कई असफलताओं का सामना करना पड़ा, जिनमें से एक यह फ़िल्म भी रही। इन असफलताओं ने ही अंततः उन्हें वापस निर्देशन पर ध्यान केंद्रित करने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
