Introduction

Anubhav (1971) Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Basu Bhattacharya, the offbeat film is widely regarded as one of the most significant relationship dramas in Hindi cinema. Starring Sanjeev Kumar, Tanuja, and Dinesh Thakur, the film marked the beginning of Bhattacharya's celebrated trilogy exploring marital alienation and emotional intimacy in urban middle-class life, later followed by Avishkaar (1973) and Griha Pravesh (1979). The film received critical acclaim for its understated realism and psychological depth, winning the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film in 1972. Its introspective treatment of marriage and emotional estrangement also influenced a new wave of relationship-oriented storytelling in mainstream Indian cinema.

Shot primarily in actress Tanuja's apartment on Altamount Road in Mumbai, Anubhav is remembered for its intimate visual style and naturalistic atmosphere. The film's evocative soundtrack, composed by Kanu Roy with lyrics predominantly by Gulzar, remains one of its most enduring artistic achievements. Playback singer Geeta Dutt delivered some of the finest songs of her career, including Meri Jaan Mujhe Jaan Na Kaho, Koi Chupke Se Aake, and Mera Dil Jo Mera Hota. While most lyrics were written by Gulzar, Koi Chupke Se Aake was penned by Kapil Kumar, who also co-wrote the film's dialogues. Additional vocal contributions from Manna Dey and Subir Sen further enriched the soundtrack's melancholic and reflective mood.

The narrative centres on Amar Sen (Sanjeev Kumar), a busy newspaper editor whose demanding professional life creates emotional distance between him and his wife Meeta (Tanuja). Seeking to revive the warmth in their marriage, Meeta dismisses the household servants and personally takes charge of domestic responsibilities, gradually restoring intimacy and companionship in their relationship. Their fragile reconciliation, however, is tested by the arrival of Meeta's former lover, Shashi Bhushan (Dinesh Thakur), who unexpectedly joins Amar's workplace. Amar initially struggles with suspicion and insecurity upon discovering their past connection, but ultimately comes to recognise Meeta's honesty and Shashi's integrity. The film concludes on a mature and hopeful note, emphasising trust, emotional understanding, and the necessity of living fully in the present rather than remaining imprisoned by the past.

Both Sanjeev Kumar and Tanuja received widespread praise for their restrained and deeply nuanced performances, which were celebrated by critics and audiences alike. Their emotionally layered portrayals contributed significantly to the film's enduring reputation as a landmark work of parallel and middle cinema in India.
