Introduction
Body of Work
In 2004, Manorama Devi, a 32-year-old Manipuri woman was arrested by soldiers of the 17th Assam Rifles Regiment from her home. Later she is found dead under suspicious circumstances, her body raped and shot. Her death provokes outrage throughout the state against the excesses of the Security Forces. This people's movement erupted spontaneously, without the backing of any political party. The protest grew into a riot. The aim of the demonstrations was not just the case of Manorama Devi, but the overall conditions in Manipur and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act which has been in effect since 1958, and which gives special rights to the army. This documentary has no voiceover or background music and even uses subtitles very sparingly. Yet, it keeps you glued through the sheer power of the camera. Kumar largely steers clear of wearing moral and political judgments up his sleeve.
