Introduction

Abhagin (1938), directed by Prafulla Roy for New Theatres Ltd., Calcutta, was a bilingual film made in Bengali under the title Abhigyan. It was based on a story by Upendranath Ganguly, with dialogue penned by A. H. Shore. The cast featured Molina Devi, Prithviraj Kapoor, Vijay Kumar, Nemo, and Bikram Kapoor.
The film tells the story of a wife, played by Molina Devi, who is rejected by her in-laws following her abduction. She finds refuge with her husband's friend (Prithviraj Kapoor). The narrative explores the wife's complex emotions toward her saviour as she is reintegrated into the family, while her husband (Vijay Kumar) grapples with his loyalty to both his wife and his friend.
While critics praised the performances of Molina Devi and Prithviraj Kapoor, the film did not perform well at the box office, as noted by Filmindia. The cinematography, however, received praise, with Bimal Roy—who would go on to become a prominent director—handling the camera work.
The music was composed by R. C. Boral, with lyrics for the Hindi version written by Munshi Arzu (Arzu Lucknawi) and for the Bengali version by Ajoy Bhattacharya. The songs, sung by Molina Devi, Vijay Kumar, Kamla Jharia, and Akbar Khan Peshawri, became popular hits. The screenplay was written by Phani Majumdar, marking his first project as an independent scriptwriter.

"अभागिन" (1938) के निर्देशक प्रफ़ुल्ल राय थे और इसका निर्माण कलकत्ता के 'न्यू थिएटर्स' स्टूडियो के बैनर तले किया गया था। न्यू थियेटर्स में बनी उस दौर की दूसरी कई फ़िल्मों की तरह अभागिन का निर्माण भी हिन्दी और बांग्ला दोनों भाषाओं में साथ-साथ किया गया था। बांग्ला में इसका नाम अभिज्ञान रखा गया था। यह फ़िल्म उपेन्द्रनाथ गांगुली की एक कहानी पर आधारित थी और फ़िल्म के संवाद ए. एच. शौरी ने लिखे थे। फ़िल्म में मोलिना देवी, पृथ्वीराज कपूर, विजय कुमार, नीमो और बिक्रम कपूर जैसे अभिनेता मुख्य भूमिकाओं में थे।
फ़िल्म की कहानी एक ऐसी स्त्री संध्या (मोलिना देवी) के बारे में है जिसे अपहरण के बाद उसके सास-ससुर स्वीकार करने से इनकार कर देते हैं। ऐसे मुश्किल हालात में उसके पति का दोस्त प्रमोद (पृथ्वीराज कपूर) उसे शरण देता है। पर आगे जब परिवार को अपनी गलती का अहसास होता है और वे उसे स्वीकार करने की बात करते हैं तो संध्या अपने उद्धारकर्ता प्रमोद के प्रति अपनी भावनाओं को लेकर उलझन में पड़ जाती है। इस बीच उसका पति (विजय कुमार) अपनी पत्नी और दोस्त, दोनों के प्रति अपनी निष्ठा और स्नेह को लेकर उलझन का सामना करता है।
फ़िल्म को समीक्षकों का स्नेह मिला और मोलिना देवी तथा पृथ्वीराज कपूर दोनों के अभिनय की सराहना हुई, लेकिन फ़िल्मइंडिया पत्रिका के अनुसार यह फ़िल्म व्यावसायिक रूप से अधिक सफल नहीं रही। हालाँकि फ़िल्म की सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी को काफ़ी प्रशंसा मिली। इस फ़िल्म में कैमरा बिमल रॉय ने संभाला था — वही बिमल रॉय जो आगे जाकर हिन्दी फ़िल्मों के एक प्रसिद्ध निर्देशक बने।
फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत आर. सी. बोराल ने दिया था। हिन्दी फ़िल्म के लिए गीत मुंशी आरज़ू या आरज़ू 'लखनवी' ने लिखे थे जबकि बांग्ला वर्ज़न के लिए गीत अजॉय भट्टाचार्य ने लिखे। फ़िल्म के गाने मोलिना देवी, विजय कुमार, कमला झरिया और अकबर खान पेशावरी जैसे गायकों ने गाए थे और इन्हें बेहद मक़बूलियत हासिल हुई। अभागिन फ़िल्म की पटकथा फणी मजूमदार ने लिखी थी और यह एक स्वतंत्र पटकथा लेखक के तौर पर उनका पहला काम था।
